Management does not invest or respect employees. They’re a bunch of indecisive bullies who put lower level employees in the middle of their mess and throw them under the bus when direction is misinterpreted due to lack of communication from supervisors and executives. No matter how remedial the task, it will be micromanaged every step of the way. There is no hierarchy within departments so I often found myself doing other people’s jobs, yet received no recognition. They have a wealth of talented individuals working for them but they have smothered them with micromanagement and unrealistic workloads. Hours upon hours are spent proving work is being completed - hours that could be spent doing said work better. When management does solicit the advice of senior staff, it is summarily dismissed because the decisions have already been made. Understaffing is endemic &, coupled with antiquated systems, makes completing the smallest tasks an heroic effort. In the last 2.5 years there have been 2 culture surveys taken. The first resulted in the implementation of flexible hours & an employee recognition program. Results of the 2nd are still pending. If they tell you the path you are going down is a bad one, stop & find out why they think that. Recognize that this is not a large, brick & mortar retailer. While our competition might be brands like RH & PB, we only have 2 full price retail stores. The catalog is still our primary contact with the customer, don't discount that. More isn't always better. Scale back assortments to manageable levels. Make larger investments in fewer products. There is absolutely no training at this company. Though coworkers are willing to help, everyone is way too busy to make time to teach as they are understaffed and overworked. Management is consistently hired from the outside. Maybe Frontgate think this will bring "new perspective" but the new management will have no sense of how any processes work therefore they have no idea what needs to be fixed (a LOT) let alone what will go into fixing and streamlining processes. Be wary of coming up with innovative ideas. Management does not like to feel "undermined" by employees working under them, they just want to have "Yes, man" employees that will do as they are told, no questions asked. The toxic environment really comes in when you realize that a majority of the employees do not like their job. The constant complaining is impossible to ignore and you find yourself joining in eventually, making your work experience miserable. There is no real sense of ownership when you realize you are not really allowed to manage your own work therefore leading to poorer work. Try to learn what actually goes into the everyday processes your team does.
