I appreciated gaining knowledge on how pharmacy claims are processed through various insurance plans and understanding what is required by the pharmacies in order to ensure patient's prescriptions are paid for. As a Prior Authorization Specialist I was required to have a Certification as a Pharmacy Technician. This is great, since there is a LOT of medical and pharmaceutical knowledge that goes into the job. The training was thorough and set me up to succeed. The manager/leader of my team was always happy, even under stress, and helped us to improve daily. Speed is definitely a factor, but as you get used to the paperwork, that comes naturally. This is NOT an easy job for anyone who does not speak English FLUENTLY, it can create problems in a prescription or authorization if something is misheard or mistyped. That being said, there MIGHT be an opening or availability for others to speak languages other than english? Just be sure that you feel confident that your speaking has no bad or hard to understand accents. If you do have an accent, just work hard and pronouncing very clearly. Since HIPAA regulations are very strict, any errors made can leave you without a job. HIPAA regulations, as interpreted by SXC, do not leave any room for human error in typing in phone/fax #s or any patient information. If you are not confident that you can type flawlessly, this may not be the job for you. I used to work in staffing and I wanted to work in corporate recruiting and they gave me a chance. The company grew quickly while I was there and unfortunately they were purchased by a competitor and closed. The job was wonderful and I use the skills I learned there in my subsequent roles.
