Have to wait your time or get lucky for certain roles or career trajectories. Sometimes politics plays a bit of a large role here too, in terms of how you are viewed, how your work is viewed, how certain promotions go, etc.
Also, professional development programs or skill trainings are non-existent. You have to get on a project or put in the work on your own to learn a new skill especially if it is outside the scope of your current role.
