It was fun!

I really enjoyed working at Barnes and Noble. My coworkers were easy to get along with. Nothing beats the smell of brewing coffee and books. If you need a quiet place to relax, I really recommend working here. I’ve had other related positions, so I never minded the busier times either.

Pay was not great. This location only paid $11 an hour so I couldn’t afford to work here long. But while I was in between jobs, I managed to make it work for me.
Also, for the few months I was there the bathrooms didn’t work. In the cafe, we also had multiple machines malfunction and it would take forever to get repaired. Even the air conditioner quit working in the back, which paired with summertime and the heat of the oven, was not a great combo.

If you have a passion for your store, I’d take the time to really focus on improving 1% a day (read Atomic Habits by James Clear) and overall bettering the customer experience. What little things can you become more officiant at? What are the “weaker” areas in your store that can be viewed as opportunities to improve? Even better organization in the cafe, getting more efficient repair teams, displaying merchandise/products more effectively in the cafe, and taking time to better train your employees could be vast improvements.
I know it’s a challenge within bigger corporations where store managers are not always in charge of payroll, but I’d recommend paying your employees more. Sadly, people can’t work on passion alone. Especially not in this economy. And I know within the few months I was there, the lack of pay and too demanding hours were big reasons many employees left and why we had a shortage of staff (hence the cycle of demanding hours). We were constantly rehiring for the same positions and I’m sure it’s not fun to always retrain as managers.

This is a wonderful job but not financially viable without other income streams. The team culture is wonderful, the customer base is respectful and a joy to work with, and the atmosphere is awesome.
