Day to day work is kind of standard, with upper leadership seeming to be really out of touch with the rest of the staff. Employees that are there MUST pick up the slack by working over. You can not refuse or you will get points. In other words, you are basically on call everyday while you are there on your regular schedule shift.. They have 3 shifts. Third shift is always permanent but 1st and 2nd shift have to rotate every 2 months. Very hard adjusting to the shift change/sleeping change, not to mention no room to do your at home chores if you work 2nd shift. Makes no sense to rotate shifts.. Hire for that shift only. Candidates will apply knowing in advance what shift it is. With all the mandatory overtime because of call out, they need to appoint 1 person per shift to be on call each day with on call pay. People have lives outside of 8 hrs of work and stress can kill, cause burn out. The department itself is a mess, extremely unorganized and it is expected that you "just go with the flow". There are no opportunities for advancement and management couldn't care less about you and your career; they only care about themselves and what you can do to make them look a bit better. I also would advise anyone who doesn't speak fluent Spanish to not apply since you will definitely be left to the side and ignored by management. Overtime and sudden changes in your schedule are expected to be accepted (for instance, you will be messaged on a Sunday night asking you to come in late/earlier the next day); even if the issue was lack of proper planning from management, you will be expected to go and change your own schedule to accommodate them. Moreover, being the chemist in this department means that any problems that arise are your fault. If sample doesn't pass it is probably because you did something wrong; so, they will make you test it until it passes. The highlights are the benefits (that are the same for any other business unit) and the people that work along side with you. Everyone that works in the lab is very close and it truly feels like family in there. However, people come and go with a certain frequency (due to what I described and more), so I don't know how the team will be in a few months from now. In any case, if you have a choice, I would advise you to go look for another place or maybe another department within the business unit. It is not worth it, even with all the nice benefits, to sacrifice your well-being.
