On it's good days, the work can be engaging. There are fleeting moments where the projects feel meaningful.

Unfortunately, those good days are far and few between. Most of the time, the work is pretty mundane, lacking variety and challenge. There is a stark lack of recognition from your team heads/management. Even when employees put in considerable effort and achieve great results, their work goes unnoticed. (Good managers are rare.
WARNING to H1B employees:
Cost cutting, layoffs and reorganization are pretty common in tech. But, the company's handling of layoffs is problematic. H1B employees are left vulnerable due to the way they do layoffs. In an event of abrupt layoff, there is no grace period offered, nor is there an attempt to distribute severance in a way that could extend an H1B employee's legal status in the US. AFAIK, 99 percent of the companies do this to support the leaving employees. This lack of support significantly shortens the available time to secure new employment under challenging circumstances.
