Poor Middle Management
Remote work, great benefits, mostly good people.
The Banking team at Square is lead by a bunch of inexperienced team leads who may be great IC's but are extremely poor managers. They were promoted with limited consideration by a manager who left the company so they act with no accountability.
One lead did absolutely nothing for over a year (they're gone now) and another is known as a bully. She actively puts people on the team down behind their backs, is loud and thinks she's hilarious. She's badmouthed PM's PMM's, Designers, Researchers, Content Writers everyone. The vibe is, don't expect to feel good about where you work keep your head down and smile and bear it. Things won't change because leadership has other things to worry about.

Not really many downsides as I had a contract position, wished I was offered a FT role though.

Dysfunction and Disarray in the Company's Creative Marketing Team
Square empowers entrepreneurs with tools to streamline operations and enhance customer experiences.
Square’s creative marketing team suffers from a severe lack of genuine leadership, exacerbating confusion and undermining productivity. Despite having individuals designated as core leaders, these figures fail to effectively guide the team. Some have remained in their positions since the company's inception, while others were recruited from prominent companies like Meta, yet they lack the necessary leadership skills.
The Creative Core lead, in particular, lacks business acumen and managerial abilities, prioritizing personal creative endeavors over setting clear goals and strategies for the team. This has led to a pattern of over-hiring, driven more by a desire to retain headcount than by actual workload demands, resulting in underutilized staff and unnecessary expenditures.
Furthermore, the failure to articulate team objectives has created ambiguity and uncertainty among team members, hindering their ability to perform effectively. The situation is compounded by the hiring of incompetent individuals, worsening team inefficiency and performance. Despite efforts by employees to raise concerns about these issues, feedback is often disregarded, and dissenters are gaslighted into silence, perpetuating a cycle of stagnation and frustration.
The core leadership team under the Creative Core lead also fails to inspire confidence, with some members showing favoritism and lacking accountability. Adding to the dysfunction, the recently hired operations lead lacks essential skills and prefers project management tasks over operational responsibilities, relying on AI applications to compensate for their shortcomings in interpersonal communication. This contributes to a toxic work environment marked by low morale, as employees are pitted against each other and trust erodes.
Despite these glaring issues, there appears to be a lack of awareness or action from higher management, exemplified by Jack Dorsey's apparent obliviousness to the toxic workplace culture festering within the company. Without decisive intervention and meaningful change, the company risks further deterioration of its workforce and overall performance.

To address the identified shortcomings within the company's creative marketing team, management should focus on several key areas. Firstly, investing in leadership development programs is crucial to empower core leaders with the necessary skills and competencies to effectively guide their teams. Providing training in business acumen, strategic planning, and team management can enhance their leadership capabilities significantly. Secondly, implementing a structured goal-setting process is essential to ensure clarity and alignment within the team. Leaders should establish specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals that align with the company's objectives and communicate them clearly to team members. Additionally, refining recruitment and hiring practices to prioritize competency and potential over tenure or external reputation is vital in building a high-performing team. Creating open and transparent feedback mechanisms, fostering a culture of collaboration and accountability, prioritizing employee morale and well-being, and improving communication and transparency at all levels of the organization are also essential steps. By addressing these key areas, management can mitigate the identified cons and cultivate a more effective and cohesive creative marketing team that is better equipped to achieve its goals and drive business success.

This place sucks
Decent pay (but doesn’t compare to other tech companies) and unlimited PTO.
I would run, not walk, away from any opportunities to work at Square, especially in sales or enablement.
Cons: no sales process exists and the leaders are all promoted from internal so no one actually knows how to build a sales process or lead sales for a rapidly scaling organization
The head of enablement is completely detached from reality. He gives high level orders that have no strategic plans.
This place is a sinking ship.
