Upper Management is out of touch
|
Culture is very high school clique like. If you are in with the cool crowd, you will advance. If you aren't, it is very difficult to move within the company. Upper management gives lip service, acting as if they care about low morale and heavy workload. They don't do anything to make changes other than blame the workers for not working smarter.

Great workplace culture

Square is an awesome place to work. The CEO is Jack Dorsey (Twitter) and he genuinely cares about his team. I personally enjoy the regular mental health days, great benefits (monthly Wellness stipend for gym, massages, fitness) and the many diverse groups that the company supports. I have had great leads and have always been supported and encouraged to ‘brand’ myself and advance through the company. My only complaint is that sometimes policies and procedures can change pretty frequently and can be overwhelming. Working in a tech space, changes are expected but the workload can be daunting when you already have so much on your plate.

The best job I've ever had
|
I honestly love my job, it's challenging, it's meaningful, I feel accomplished but I'm not overly stressed (most of the time). I had a baby this year and not only was my maternity leave fully covered it was 16 weeks long and allowed me to fully heal after a traumatic birth. The pay is some of the best in the industry, as well as our benefits and they kick in day one. On the down side I feel like our progression is heading more towards our cut throat corporate counterparts. We've lost a lot of benefits and some of the things implemented are causing severe burnout and it's clear it's not working. I think in order to maintain relevance and growth they've sacrificed employee care a bit. However it's to be expected, every company kills a little bit of your soul when they employ you.

I spent a year working there. The pay is decent, but not enough to compensate for the stress of the job. Advancement is the equivalent of a hazing ritual. The training could be better. No one really knows anything, but they know how to find the information for you. Leadership lacks integrity. The people there can be described as rude, immature, inept, and incompetent. it's a great place to work until something better comes along.

Unfortunately very toxic with unrealistic expectations. Don't care about you as an individual.

Another toxic corporation with a pretty image. Most of the people are great, but a lot of disappointments in management, particularly those hired externally. Expectations are very high, and ongoing training is not offered. You get a couple weeks at the beginning and that's pretty much it. Management support depends on who you were assigned to; could be great, could be terrible. Sales management continues to squeeze employees without concern for the impact of constant stress and consistently growing metrics. It's a rough existence for new hires. The most helpful people are team members and mentors (again, if you're lucky to get some good ones), but they're stressed to the max so you feel guilty asking for help.
If you're into tone deaf corporate sales, being pushed to make lots and lots of cold calls, and don't mind being sleazy with a fake-positive image, this will be a great fit. Otherwise, you'll be disappointed. The software is nice, though.
Don't count on the commissions immediately - they likely won't be a part of your income for at least 9 months and are taxed very high. Benefits are great - consider those part of your pay.

"Unlimited" time off is definitely not unlimited, and you feel too scared to take time off. Very stressful. Expectations are unrealistic.

Clueless leadership who have no idea what they’re doing. Toxic culture.

The senior leadership team literally makes things up as they go along. They have no real vision or true sense of how to effectively run a business and they are big on cliques. If you don’t fit their mold, they exclude and marginalize you while touting (loudly) how inclusive they are. It’s sad and absolutely exhausting. Not worth it.
