A great job with an even greater purpose
|
ACLU OK is an amazing place to work. They were extremely flexible when it came to hours and when and where you worked. The staff is very understanding of the gravity of the work, so they are always more than willing to talk to and support their interns who may be struggling with some of the heavier content. At the end of the day, you know you're making a difference, and helping people fight the good fight. I couldn't have asked for a better place to intern.

It was alright, deserved better pay for sure though
|
Meaningful work, especially when you care about the stuff you’re talking about because you are genuinely passionate talking to people. Had definitely some very interesting conversations canvassing on the street raising funds for the causes. General vibe was pretty good, I was 17/18 and I genuinely really liked it. Went to different places every day. Feet hurt from standing that much but hey, it was chill. You got to meet a lot of different people from all over on the job as well.

What makes this place great is truly the staff who all cares about what they do. But there is a lot of mess when it comes to senior staff. Also if you do not live near the office locations you may not make the listed salary

The ACLU has taken tremendous strides to center employee wellbeing, equity, diversity and inclusion and building a strong work culture ranging from management trainings to an expansive scope of ERGS.
The culture often revolves around legal and program staff with other departments as an afterthought.
There have been a lot of growing pains in recent years with some senior leadership changes, re-organization, departmental mergers and decoupling.
In many ways change is constant. There is often more work than can reasonably be accomplished and a close eye on headcount.
The best part of working here is the mission followed by passionate, smart and diverse colleagues.
There are also very strong minded colleagues resistant to change and poor management skills.
Overarching organizational goals and priorities are largely undefined and create difficulties downstream.
