I’m here because I love what I do. Working on open source projects at Automattic with brilliant, empathetic teammates is an absolute joy. The work is fulfilling, the environment is intellectually stimulating. I'm fully aware that compensation and benefits are not competitive.

The leadership, specifically the CEO, is more than just problematic—it’s toxic. His public outbursts on Slack, where he berates and humiliates employees, are not just stressful—they're destructive. This toxicity has had a trickle-down effect, influencing the rest of the leads in the company. Initially, I was feeling a strong dislike towards my own lead, but I later realized that it was a result of the toxic environment created by the CEO. This became evident when he was temporarily replaced during his "sabbatical", which markedly changed the team's morale. Matt's frequent micromanagement and blatant favoritism, despite other divisions significantly contributing to revenue, are demoralizing. His behavior has not only tarnished the company's reputation but also profoundly affected the mental health of many employees, including myself, leading some of us to seek therapy. Before joining Automattic, I held the company in high regard, but I've become disillusioned by the stark reality of its leadership.

Leadership must change. The CEO's behavior has damaged our work culture and staff morale. We were hopeful that his sabbatical would give him a much needed break for self-reflection and adjustment. However, we are disappointed that he did not fully disconnect during this time and continues to berate people on Slack. We urge him to reconsider his approach and commit to a sabbatical that allows for genuine disengagement.

This is the best company I've ever worked for. My team is intelligent, kind, and hardworking. The benefits are outstanding. The culture is strong.
It's nice to have a relatively high amount of control over the work I'm doing (compared to other job experiences) and to be valued by teammates when I contribute to work outside of my domain.
I appreciate the high value placed on meetups and the willingness of the company to spend that money so that teams can get together. I'll never leave remote work, but getting that in-person time with team members is fantastic and definitely leads to higher productivity in our day to day work.
It's also great to work for a company that is transparent about decisions, and will roll those decisions back if there is too much negative feedback from the community or employees. While we may occasionally question what goes on, it feels good knowing that those questions are listened to and humbly addressed by our executive team (sometimes).

The one major con for me is that being made a team lead doesn't come with a promotion or pay raise. Regardless of whether a person has the option to rotate out of a lead role, people should be compensated for the extra responsibility and work. The work of being a lead feels unacknowledged and unvalued with that lack of corresponding compensation.
It's also very hard to define career growth and direction when promotions aren't really a thing here — we can choose our own titles (to an extent) but that makes title changes... meaningless. I would love to see more defined paths for growth here (and not through the coaching program; we're working for money, just like the business is).
