Career Guidance Development was founded by the dynamic duo ; Ms.Nthabeleng Ledwaba and Ms.Lehlogonolo Sibisi. Deeply concerned by the unemployment rate amongst youth in South Africa, due to a lack of career guidance training; these two young female social entrepreneurs, created a career guidance workbook to empower high school students to reach their full potential.
As such, Career Guidance Development has collaborated on various career guidance programs with the Department of Science & Technology, Department of Education (Limpopo) and The Limpopo Youth Commission. Alongside this, Career Guidance Development has also worked with The Palabora Foundation and DeBeers Venetia Mine on their A-Book-A-Child project.
South Africa is a young country. As a democracy, it emerged little more than a decade ago. It is also young in that, in contrast with the developed world, nearly 40 % of its people are between 14 and 35 years of age. Youth in South Africa are therefore not an obscure sub-culture - they are a large part of the population.
However, the vast majority of learners do not receive adequate, or any, careers information and guidance. The frontline community organisations are hopelessly underfunded, Life Orientation teachers are mostly overwhelmed and there is no comprehensive and independent careers information service that is accessible to all. The information “thundershower” provision is largely of a quality that does not start where the vast majority of the learners are.
