CFL provides classes, career counseling and tutoring sessions to adults seeking their GED, credentials, English proficiency, math skills, technology understanding and/or assistance in obtaining their desirable career path. Almost 40 percent of those living in poverty in Philadelphia lack a high school credential. Without one, they are at a serious disadvantage when trying to find work or earn family-sustaining wages. Out of reach for them are jobs in the fastest-growing sectors - education and the health services – which require higher education or post-secondary training. While 217,000 adults in Philadelphia do not have a high school diploma, the number of adults whose lives are impacted by a lack of literacy skills is far larger: an estimated 550,000 individuals are considered low literate. Center for Literacy disrupts the cycle of poverty by providing the knowledge and skills for Philadelphians to succeed in post-secondary education, to compete in the 21st century economy, and to support the educational attainment of their children. Born as a volunteer tutoring program in 1968, CFL has served tens of thousands of individuals with classes in adult basic education, GED prep and English as a second language, along with youth initiatives, family literacy, job readiness, and small group and one-on-one tutoring. Our classes run Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM. We provide classes in the morning, afternoon, and evening hoping learners may be able to fit school in with their daily schedule. If you, or someone you know, can benefit from our free educational classes for adults in Philadelphia, call 215-474-1235 x229 or email inquiry@centerforliteracy.org to speak with our friendly administrative assistants.
