Pre-multiple layoffs, we had a really good company culture. Now it's mostly "get the work done". Product team is tired and weary. There are(were) amazing product owners and product managers guiding the way and trying to protect the culture.

Micromanagement on every level top-down.
No one feels like they can make their own decision and be confident about it. Eng leadership and actual leadership have different viewpoints, and the product team is in the middle negotiating and taking the blame. Eng leadership experience is outdated as they have been at ChowNow for so long.

There are some really great supervisors in this department that poor their heart and souls into the company.

The changes from the top haven’t been really hard on moral. There were multiple rounds of layoffs due to poor budgeting and planning. Ultimately led to a lot of bad moral.

ChowNow leaned heavily into Agile Software Development during my time there. The company paid for a Scrum Master certification course for everyone who was willing to take it. Work was organized and progress was measured according to Agile practices.

Team dynamics were more tribal and territorial than collaborative. Some individuals are genuinely helpful and willing to work hard towards common objectives. Others seem to elevate their personal work preferences over the needs and goals of the team. Unfortunately the latter are long-time employees and protected by management.

Great marketing stems from a financial leap of faith, testing new and impactful strategies, and discovering the most lucrative route. When the marketing budget is less than 1/4th of an employee salary and execs expect millions of new diners to use the app (all the while restaurants are churning in the hundreds), the task becomes an Ouroboros.
I want this company to be successful. I poured my heart and soul into it. And yet, they gave up on consumer marketing. Email and push notifications along with a few Branch banners will not compete with the likes of UberEats and DoorDash. There was a time when I felt leadership would finally put a serious foot in the door of consumer marketing, which leads to more diners... which leads to more restaurants... Alas. I will continue to cheer them on, but I hope they pivot before it's too late.
