I worked for a Chubbies retail store for a year and a half and was promoted to a management position within the store I was located at. I absolutely loved my job until this happened solely because I didn’t expect the upper management to be as bad as it was. The founders on the other hand are great people and I don’t think they realize how the people are that they have running their upper management. They were always wanting everyone to be in sync with each other and were always ready to offer assistance if we needed it. If you’re looking to be a weekender (sales associate) I would have recommended this job to you a year ago, but not now. The company did very well this last year and decided to lower the pay for sales associates and it was at that point that I realized they are only in it for the money. I loved the people I worked with in my store and the other retail stores, but the upper management was so unorganized and fake with the people below them that I simply couldn’t be around it any longer. They make promises they don’t keep and then when you bring it up to them they act as if it never happened. It’s a constant “I’ll speak with so and so about it and get this moving for you” to no avail. They make e-comm priority over the retail stores (understandable during covid) but if you have all these new funds to produce product, why not produce the product everywhere? It makes no sense and caused us to constantly have unhappy customers coming to every store looking for things and coming in to empty shelves and no inventory. Lastly, the whole frat boy mentality is just exhausting and gross to be around. This company is honestly like being back in high school where people are constantly talking bad about everyone and then being “nice” to your face right after. I’ve never experienced such a toxic work environment in my life and hope I never do again. It is not worth it!!!

Chubbies was an opportunity that I was genuinely excited to step into, as a Store Manager. I was excited about the culture that they projected on social media and I just assumed that the company would be about the same. Oh, I couldn't have been any more mislead.
Small budgets, lack of planning, constantly being communicated with the words "ACTION REQUIRED" each day of the week got really old, really fast. I suppose that's from the inexperienced former regional manager that was ironically shifted into an HR position.
This job sucked the pure joy out of my life, while at Chubbies. The amount of talent that was underappreciated from all departments is astonishing and a pure tragedy. Executives (the real ones, not the "retail 'execs'") seemed well connected and as if they would not promote this type of leadership, but their inconsistency was just as consistent.
For the most part, I have blocked the chapter of working for Chubbies Shorts out of my mind but looking back, I can't think of one thing that I learned or "took away" from that job that will help me advance in my next chapter. I will admit that almost all of this has to do with my direct supervisor and their lack of ability to physically engage with their stores. When you have such a small store count, (no more than 13 stores at one time) there is no genuine excuse to not know what is going on in each location. The “Retail Execs” would have rather spent time on the window mannequins wear the best outfit with no price tags showing than discuss genuine issues such as inconsistent daily pricing with web pricing, no notice on sales that would impact the stores, unpredictable shipments, no signage to support the deals that would be going on, the consistent last-minute communication, not enough operating hours to effectively schedule sales associates and plan for eventing, and scheduling meetings to talk about what they did or how they felt about what was going on in the company.
It's very clear that this company started out of California, as the work ethic shows on all levels. The lack of urgency in important issues but the attention to detail on small matters is genuinely astonishing.
I would not recommend this job to anyone who has ever had any prior retail experience or worked for a company with a real structure.

Just like any other company, they're in it for the money
|
They'll pay you as little as they can and still keep you on. I'm a woman and I make less than my male coworkers in the same position. When I brought this up, it took took months to get a 4% raise and I still make less. They do listen to their employees, and have fun benefits, but this is definitely not a long term place.

Fun place to work with overall company issues

I loved working here because of my store. The manager was amazing, everyone I worked with was so fun and helpful and we all worked really well together. Manager supported our ideas and encouraged us to leave our mark with the company and product. Overall the company itself was a mess and the people working higher up didn't care about sales associates or their management. They expected a lot from us and our manager but didn't follow through on things they promised or appreciated our work at all. Besides that I loved this job and the people I worked with so much, they made that job what it is.

The customers were always a blast to interact with. I liked talking and getting to know them. There is one thing about the way they check out which makes things difficult. Shopify isn't the best. Hours are rounded down when you clock out. Sometimes there were days that were slow.
