Potential to progress in a toxic work environment.
|
The work is very structured and customer behaviour is unsurprising for a country that generally has a poor opinion of housing association tenants. The workload can be stressful, and some customers can be challenging, but the most stressful part of the job is not the workload or customers but the staff. The culture of staff from varied departments is toxic, some staff (mostly the staff with 10-15 years until retirement) have lost interest in their work and due to previous experiences feel let down by the organisation. I’ve learnt to keep myself to myself, concentrate on my work, and not listen to the negativity.
The company is very keen on flexible working and working from home might be a good way to not be heavily exposed to the toxicity of disgruntled employees. The management seem to struggle as if they are working with one hand tied behind their back, they want to be supportive to staff but don’t have the tools to do so.
The most enjoyable part of my work is the work and the work life balance. I am fortunate as there is no ability in my role to work from home, so when I leave the office, I don’t take work home with me physically or mentality, nor do I have to work over unpaid to complete my work. The work is great because it involves great interaction with customers, and pride myself on giving the best customer service I can provide.

It was great when I first began at Citizen
|
When I first started working here it was great. It was one of the most diverse places to work.
People I work with are awesome and very knowledgeable.
I enjoyed being able to help people feel safe. I have about 31 years in the work force. So keep this in mind while you read this.
Then about 10 months or so later, a few people got upset and wanted to unionize the company. In my past experiences, a union has caused companies to lose revenue and then they're forced to layoff their work force. Their investors do not want to deal with a union. That's going to be the same situation here. Also, their benefits can drop them because unionizing changes their contract with their benefit provider.
Not all unions are bad. Many get fair results for their employees. But in a start-up company, it could really damage the company before it has time grow. This means layoffs and doubling hours on current employees in order to get the workload completed as scheduled.
It'll take a year to get your first contract with a union and that means no funding to keep the company afloat while you're waiting. Because everything has to go through your union rep for approval, this slows down any forward movement with a start-up. The list of requests the group had for unionizing, two, maybe 3 were what I considered justified requests. And those 3 requests could be handled internally without a union. The other requests, I found those to be inappropriate for a union to handle.
While I enjoy working here. I don't agree with unionizing. I also didn't agree with them trying to silence about 5 or more of my coworkers from being able to vote on the union. The list of names were given to HR and we got told what this group was trying to do. This creates tension in the work place when you try to silence people who deserve to have a voice.
It really showed me how self-entitled some people behave with their virtue signaling. This type of behavior is childish to observe and doesn't belong in the work place.

The worst place I have ever worked.
|
Please do not apply to work at Citizen. It is by far the worst company that I have ever worked for. It needs a complete restructure and they need to remove the long term employees, most of which have got into bad habits. Some of the most unhelpful people I have ever met, and a rife blame culture. Little customer care and no employee support. Please do not believe their boasts, it is all just a tick box exercise. No job is worth sacrificing your mental health, wish that someone had warned me, do not do it, you have been warned.
|
Pays well.

Blame culture. No customer care. Disrespectful colleagues.

Some of the worst people I have ever worked with.
|
Please do not apply to work at Citizen. It is so bad that I would not recommend anyone even considering renting one of their properties. The biggest problem is that it is a company of individuals, most of whom do not care. If they do care they have a funny way of showing it. Rude, unhelpful, lazy, chaotic, disrespectful, inconsistent, some of the worst people I have ever had the misfortune of working with. A terrible culture of blame and passing the buck. Its so bad that I began to avoid asking for help and I avoided going into the office as much as possible for fear of being ignored and scowled at. Citizen promote employee well being and good news stories but in practice I saw the opposite. The only good working for Citizen is working with the tenants. Citizen is a bricks and mortar company and that is not for me. A company that hides behind clever marketing. Do not believe the hype.

Avoid the Contact centre
|
I can't say for sure if the whole company is the same. But the culture in the contact centre is horrible and the atmosphere is toxic. Management only care about back stabbing each other instead of working together. It's a highly sexest environment. Management don't like to see friendships form so they purposely put you difference shift if they think tour too pally with someone. Salary is good if you worked here for 5 years. Training is poor. Progression is poor.

Awful management team. Team leaders are great though. Snakey people. No compassion from management. Made to feel uncomfortable. Management are completely unapproachable. Work is ok but not worth working there.
