The Finnish Metalworkers' Union - Metalliliitto, founded in 1899, is the largest union of industrial workers in Finland.
The Finnish technology industry employed altogether 148 000 people in 2013. The Metalworkers' Union organises about 85 % of the blue collar workers working in the metal industry. The total union membership is some 148 000, of which 20 % are women.
The Finnish Metalworkers' Union negotiates collective agreements for eight separate sectors:
• technology industry (e.g. engineering, shipbuilding, iron and steel industry, electronic industry, car manufacturing)
• car repair workshops and clerical employees of car retail
• mining
• precious metals sector
• sheet metal industry
• repair works for mechanical forest industry
• civilian workers in the Ministry of Defence repair shops
• technical maintenance and service
National collective agreements stipulate the minimum salary and other terms of employment to which the employee is entitled. The membership fee for the Metalworkers' Union in 2014 is 1,75 per cent of the employee's salary.
