Over a year to come up with mission, vision and values... and when it was released, oof... needless to say should’nt have taken that long. *Many internal departments barely communicate with each other. Making working here hell, nobody takes responsibility or asserts ownership of any project. Projects just passed along to the next person. Why projects never completely realized or could’ve been better. *Limited staff for producing events, leaving staff pulled thin all the time. Expected to make things work when better planning could’ve prevented issues *Laughable senior leadership— consistently ignores employee complaints/ issues/ suggestions. *Very few POC in upper/mid management. *Failed Diversity/inclusion trainings, due to upper management being called out for their behaviors, which of course never they never actually addressed. private:friendsofthehighline https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=374745 Jul 28th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Friends of the High Line Anonymous Former Employee United States USA Beyond the Facade: Toxic, racist, and classist work environment. It is undeniable that The High Line as a park is gorgeous and a brilliant idea. The maintenance team and gardeners do an amazing job as experts in this field. Great restaurants to go out for lunch/dinner in the neighborhood. Amazing if you happen to join a team with a generous budget allocated for staff meals. You might be on a team that is privileged with the perks of working from home but don't count on that. This is mostly for a few. In my 15 years as a professional, I have worked in different capacities in NYC and abroad, mostly within non-profit organizations. The High Line is the most toxic environment I have ever worked in my life. The culture within the organization is deeply racist, classist, ableist, and transphobic, even within top-level senior management. People of color with remarkable experience are pushed out of the organization. In one-year four Senior Directors/ CEO's decided to leave the organization as their work to support the Highline in implementing a more equitable and community-centered framework was received with a lot of resistance. Their role as People of Color is mostly tokenized. The HR Department is an active participant in the harm and lack of accountability within the organization when issues are reported. In some instances, they themselves are directly involved in modeling the toxic environment leading to staff members feeling a lack of protection. This is one of the main reasons for the high turn over and/or employees deciding to pursue legal action with a third party. In the past 5 years, the organization has hired about 3 different trainers doing equity work without success as they find "no one really understands the unique culture of the High Line", discrediting their processes of accountability and change proposed by facilitators. Their superficial approach to checking boxes around equity work is disappointing and very telling of how they generally operate. The entire time I was employed I could hear and sense the discomfort of other employees as HR and Senior Leadership lacked the skills and willingness to do the necessary work to make the changes needed. I've never seen such high turn over in any organization, from top to bottom. In recent years the HL has claimed to uplift POC artists through public programs and claim to do anti-racist work by doing so. However, internally it is very clear the intentions behind that facade are to utilize this narrative to continue to profit and shift the negative impact of gentrification communities have voiced since the HL was built until today. Some departments try really hard to develop programs that are intentional and of service to the community, but once those individual leaders are pushed out the work begins back from zero. Departments work on a silo, with their own HR policies and work culture. There is a lack of collaboration and the culture revolves around people working for their own individual career advancement rather than an organizational mission. This has made the HL an organization that thrives on gossip, assumptions, and retaliation. It was very dishearting to come to work every day. The impact on your emotional wellbeing is not worth it, even though most positions are at a higher paying rate than in other organizations. The reason why many people take the risk, including me. I don't come to work to sit and do nothing. This is not the place if you want that. There's not one person at the Org that I don't like working with. Seriously. I feel acknowledged and appreciated. The connections you make in the field will be invaluable. I can also be myself here, which is rare in a more corporate environment. The only con personally is that we're outgrowing our administrative office space, and space for our operations team. It's a common things in NYC I think. On the flip-side, administratively, if I have a project I need to work on undisturbed, I'm able to request to work offsite or at home.
