When a shooting happened at UC Berkeley, students reported it on the Wildfire app within a minute to instantly notify 4,000 nearby students to avoid the area. In the following hour, over 2,000 other students downloaded the app and by the end of the week, we had 50% of the campus on our app — literally spreading like wildfire.
Wildfire was created when Hriday, one of our founders, was nearly mugged outside a library on UC Berkeley's campus. He posted on Facebook to warn my friends to avoid the area but he knew it wouldn't reach thousands of other students who weren't friends with him or scrolling through their newsfeed. We built Wildfire as a much more effective way to communicate with the people right around you in real-time.
Users post about many categories from campus safety to parties and events to celebrity sightings. Whether it's spotting Matthew McConaughey at UT Austin or preparing for a hurricane together at UNC Greensboro, students use Wildfire to help keep the rest of campus informed on what's trending on campus daily.
Wildfire is now used by tens of thousands of college students at over 30 campuses and we're on track to hit 200 in the next year. Colleges are just the beginning, soon Wildfire will be used by everyone, everywhere - from cities to different countries - to find out what's happening around them instantly.
We're a 4-person team backed by Y Combinator and several other top-tier Silicon Valley investors. This is a unique opportunity to join a startup with significant momentum where you'll help define our company as it evolves, and build a product that will impact people's lives daily.
