Generous PTO. New CEO who offers promising hope for the organization.
In the Science/Program Department, Management are MDs and PhDs with polished scientific resumes--however none have managerial (or even personable) skills. Quick to make judgements about staff that will haunt your growth at the organization.

The unicorn of work-life balance - it is touted as a benefit but does it really exist?
New Executive Director, mission, benefits, kind colleagues
Exhausting and demanding workload leading to staff burnout. Hard to find time to take more than a few days vacation here and there. Highly deadline driven. Work from home days just mean 10-12 hour days at your home office trying to stay on top of workload.

Meet with non-director level staff to inquire about staff morale and burnout. There has always been an element of "glad handing" at PCORI. The messaging sounds good but the promises to address staff needs and ideas don't seem to materialize.

PCORI has a race problem
Patient centered outcomes research is important. The health benefits are some of the strongest in the area.
PCORI has a problem with paying Black people the same as white people. PCORI has a problem with promoting Black people. PCORI had external consultants come in and ask Black women if they felt they were being treated fairly then did nothing with the information collected.

previous strong leadership, decent outlook for future
My colleagues are probably what have made the job very good.
I find my direct manager is a good listener and takes my concerns seriously. This manager also communicates effectively with the team's leader.
The work that comes in is quite interesting, and the partnerships with program associates can also be wonderful. Sometimes the partnerships you develop with PIs and research institutions can be really interesting, especially if a PI applies for another award at PCORI or another funder to continue that research and is successful.
If a topic of interest to becomes a funding priority, it becomes a gold mine of interesting work for you, even though it's a lot of work to handle.
Sometimes you have to manage a bad contract, and you have little autonomy to fix problems.
Right now, there is a huge shift in the leadership. This is not necessarily bad, but it is an unknown, and for some, that is intimidating and frustrating, especially when your manager keeps changing.
You don't get a say in terms of working groups or funding areas you want to lead. The areas of interest in PCORI's portfolio is at the mercy of oversight committees. But that is something one should know before interviewing there.

Try to find other ways that staff can shine so that their opportunities won't be limited to what stakeholders, committees, and board members want. You employ smart people, and it's great when everyone gets a chance to show management what they can really do for the organization.
