Mission: The Philadelphia Academies, Inc. designs and implements industry-informed, career-connected learning strategies for schools that position young people for success in post-secondary education and the workforce.
Vision: We envision a world where all young people have the skills, resources and networks to reach their full potential.
History and Current Services: PAI was founded in 1969 to address the dropout crisis plaguing Philadelphia schools. The initial thrust of PAI’s work was on implementation and management of Career Academies, a specific model of career-connected learning created by PAI’s founders that has had demonstrable success in improving student outcomes and been put into action in over 8,000 schools nationally. In the past, PAI's work was exclusively tied to “pocket academies”- small schools within schools - that served only a portion of a particular school’s enrollment, as well as an All Academy (or Wall-to-Wall) approach, whereby all students in an individual high school are enrolled in a Career Academy Pathway.
Recognizing that a one-size-fits-all approach is limiting with respect to realizing its mission and vision, PAI has developed a more diversified portfolio of career-connected learning strategies. While still providing technical assistance and professional development in Career Academies, PAI has defined additional ways via which it delivers career-connected learning and school supports: Freshman Academies, Work-Based Learning, Career Pathways, Bridge Programming, and Data Services. A core set of capacities in industry organizing, badging/credentialing and data collection/analysis infuses all of our strategies.

The mission of Philadelphia Academies, Inc. (PAI) is to expand life and economic options for Philadelphia public school students through career-focused programming that prepares young people for employment and post-secondary education.
The primary assumption in PAI’s model is that we can significantly change life and economic outcomes for young people by motivating them to learn through their own interests and real-world, career-connected experiences and curriculum. Embedded in the model are three core activities – programming that motivates, the active development of networks with caring adults, and local advocacy at a policy level for instructional and structural changes in secondary education. These efforts work together to produce the outcomes that we desire for students.
Our role is to serve as an intermediary, bringing the financial and human resources of the business community into Philadelphia public schools, providing work and life readiness skills, making connections to internship experiences, and offering scholarships that provide a path toward a productive life.
