Phoenix is Leicester's independent cinema and art centre, a charitable organisation located in the city's Cultural Quarter close to the Curve Theatre.
Phoenix provides a popular programme of world cinema, digital arts exhibitions, short courses and community events. Our café bar is a vibrant hub for many who live and work in the city.
In 2017 we announced an ambitious £7 million development plan called Phoenix 2020 which will see us double the number of our cinema screens from two to four, create a new art gallery, a bigger café bar and add more education facilities by the year 2020.
Since moving to Leicester’s Cultural Quarter seven years ago, Phoenix has seen audience numbers double to around 200,000 visits a year. We expect Phoenix 2020 to grow numbers further – increasing cinema sales by 32,000 annually and doubling the number of arts attenders to 111,000.
The development will also generate valuable additional income to further improve our financial resilience to deliver upon our charitable aims for the future.
Phoenix 2020 has the support of the charity’s major stakeholders including Leicester City Council, Arts Council England (ACE), De Montfort University (DMU), the British Film Institute (BFI), and the Leicester and Leicestershire Economic Partnership (LLEP).
We have secured a provisional £4 million from Arts Council and £1 million from Leicester City Council and been granted planning permission. We are now working to raise the remaining funds and plan to begin building in late 2019.
Discussions are under way with local businesses who are keen to contribute to the development through sponsorship. We would welcome opportunities to talk to other organisations or individuals who may be interested in supporting our growth.

Growing numbers of people are enjoying the Phoenix experience - 190,000 connected with our programme last year and many more come along just to enjoy the cafe. 96% say they would recommend us.
You can see the best films from around the world alongside the work of local film makers, as well as international theatre, ballet and music streamed live by satellite to Phoenix.
Businesses and community organisations enjoy the stimulating contemporary environment for conferencing, training, networking and social events.
The education programme includes activities for all ages with 8,200 attendances in 2012/13 (3,300 for children and schools; 2,700 for adults; and 2,200 at film-makers and artists events).
Phoenix is a registered charity and makes a significant contribution to the economic and cultural development of Leicester with its founding stakeholders Leicester City Council and De Montfort University, and Arts Council England.
