Rochelle Brickner (b.San Antonio, TX, 1973), aka Repurpose Me, is a self taught mixed media and textile artist, inspired by ludicrous social norms, media, and politics. She often equates her art with visual poetry, serving to express emotion and challenge thought at the same time.
Before finally deciding to pursue her passion in mixed media art, Rochelle worked as a hair stylist for 13 years, which included many opportunities to explore and break the monotony of salon work by participating as a hair artist in hair & fashion shows within the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area. These experiences were inspirational to her more recent explorations in textiles, which have taken her beyond creating 3-dimensional mixed media pieces, to experimenting with heat fusing recycled plastic bags into a durable material. The material is later expressed into her mixed-media work or used to create functional items such as purses, bags, and wallets which are showcased in the Kemper Museum gift shop.
Overall Rochelle makes a conscious effort to predominantly use repurposed and recycled materials within her work (dually noted as treasure trash), suggestively advocating environmental conscious to a “throw away” society.
Rochelle has hosted Eco-art workshops with Greenworks KC and via the Plaza and Central Kansas City Public Libraries.
