Tons of great change, great people
|
|
The people at Vidyard are easily the biggest pro. This team has talented, ambitious folks from all walks of life and each bring something great to the table.
Comp, benefits, tech stack, and culture are all pros as well.
Massive opportunity to make an impact at any level right now.
|
Folks aren’t used to a tough market, and are not used to keeping a high pace when numbers are down. Paired with lots of changing, moving pieces, it's a lot to handle.

Lack of job security and mass layoffs
|
|
1. Some of the people who work here are truly amazing, but with mass layoffs and exits, these are now dwindling, and top talent is not choosing to stick around
2. Work is meaningful and projects are great resume builders
3. The product is great
4. Flexible health benefits and RRSP matching
|
1. The leadership team lacks diversity and as a result ‘tech-bro’ culture has resurfaced since the senior leadership re-org
2. After enduring more than a year of constant quarterly layoffs, the company then laid off ~20% of the entire staff, weeks before the Christmas holidays, where the majority of these employees were completely blindsided
3. The company does not backfill roles and you will likely be doing the workload of 3-4 roles with the pressure of ever-increasing targets
4. The company conducted a “title standardization” where many roles were given a much-deserved promotion with no true recognition, or pay raise
5. The company is now rehiring for similar roles that had previously been laid off less than 6 months ago, due to "economic circumstances"
6. Strategic focus changes every quarter with last-minute communication

Think more than a quarter ahead. Create more diverse work environments. Provide transparency to employees. Recent layoffs should be used as a lens before posting on LinkedIn (for example, don't feature leadership outings $$).

The management training needs to be improved
|
|
Company did very well during the pandemic. I was enabled with great software to do my job. I was given a pay raise after a year at the company.
|
While the company was fun and I was excited about its products and the work I was doing at the best of times, the management was inadequate. I was part of a team environment that I found to be toxic team environment because many individual performers that I worked closely with shared the same skillset and professional aspirations and there was competition within the team to avoid tedious or difficult work. The last 6 months at the company were also the roughest of my career so far. There was a letter sent to HR around the time I was laid off about not meeting performance expectations, with some complaints being that I had not proactively sought enough meetings with other teams and had underperformed in technical projects. When I defended the reasoning behind the technical mistakes listed by my manager and how they couldn't be avoided, I wasn't heard and was even berated by my manager on Zoom for an entire hour while working remotely in public. The major complaint was that I hadn't properly tested automation I had built before it was launched in a recent project. It turned out that most of the errors were due to other members of the project. Even then, it was surprising to me that such minute errors in one of hundreds of projects that I had contributed to had drawn that much attention.
In my final performance evaluation, my name was assigned to a new manager in my department who had no supervisory association to me and was minimally involved with my direct work. Unfortunately, this individual reviewed me negatively and even noted that they thought my performance had declined in my last year at the company and they recommended that I get back to previous levels to reset my career trajectory. I am still disheartened that my professional contributions at Vidyard were discredited due to this individual's own personal perceptions.
Regarding professional growth at the company, I was promised opportunities to become a team lead or advance into a management position repeatedly. My manager informed me in the same fiscal year that I was laid off that they were working with the talent team behind closed doors to coordinate my promotion to a team lead with management responsibilities. In the next fiscal quarter, the management team changed their minds and I was informed that I would not be considered for any advancements for as long as I worked at the company. I was subsequently laid-off without forewarning along with 20% of the company.
