Great people make great teams
The people at WhatCounts are probably its greatest "pro" in my book. Everyone I've worked with--or for--in my 6+ years has been kind, smart, focused, and hard-working. The other thing I like is that WhatCounts is never satisfied with status quo; they are always looking for impactful ways to improve the product and make work fun.
As with any dynamic company there are changes that require flexibility in attitude and sometimes in job duties. For a person who is not comfortable with change this would be a "con".

Established, forward-thinking company with start-up feel
Good teams start with great people. I can't rave enough about the folks on the team and the work they do for WC's clients. The feedback from partners is that the company's service and product offerings are strong, but it is the execution and dedicated support delivered by the team that has built long-term partnerships. People here keep focus where it needs to be with defined ownerships and goals, help and support each other, and make work enjoyable and engaging.
People at WC get the opportunity to learn, grow, and take calculated risks. There's trust in your abilities and work. There's belief that you can and will meet the challenges that present themselves, even if that means you grow outside of your job description. Leadership wants and expects you to carry the ball in big moments, and does its best to make sure credit is placed where due as wins happen.
Having just wrapped up 2020, I think it's fair to highlight that this team was super supportive of each other beyond business hours. That's absolutely huge.
The company, though established and stable, still requires folks to maintain start-up mindsets in my opinion based on these factors:
1. It is not uncommon to wear multiple hats. This may or may not appeal to some folks, so honesty upfront is the best approach for all.
2. It is not uncommon to have to lean in with extra hours/effort from time to time as the needs of customers and the business dictate. But work-life balance is there and championed by leadership. While you may be asked to give of your time when absolutely needed in rare occasions, you will be thanked and pushed to make up for it.

Disappointing Company
I learned a lot about the industry. I met some interesting people.
Sr. Management team is not cohesive. Strategies and focus changed to often to be productive. I found it just wasn't a comfortable place to work and be at.

Won't Be Around In 2 Years
WhatCounts is very flexible with work from home policy. This allows team members to go into an office in Durham, Seattle, or Atlanta if they want, or work full time remote. Team uses modern systems like Slack for internal communication which is great, and office culture is casual and relaxed. Some roles have decent commission plans & bonus payouts, which while they aren't huge, can be a nice supplement to income.
The pay range for most roles is on average 10k less than what other companies offer. Post acquisition + merger, OSG claimed salaries would be reviewed. This never happened between 2018-2019. This leads to the team being complacent and unmotivated. The quality of the product is very poor, and the software issues plague clients. The technical team often brushes off major issues and client complaints and does little to solve the issue / appease the client. OSG, the parent company, is trying to force more partnerships amongst all of their organizations. This led to us being incentivized to try and sell services to clients that were not fully fleshed out or strategized, causing more pain for clients. The last main issue was the lack of courtesy and respect amongst many teams. It wasn't at all surprising to have executive level management berate employees. Developers out of the Atlanta office were notorious for being "difficult" to work with and would take to sarcasm and public humiliation if you asked them about projects. In general, it was the most toxic workplace environment. Career opportunities were never addressed in any internal strategies with my manager. The stability of the company is terrible. I truly would be shocked if WhatCounts still existed in 2 years.

Hire people who care and want to do a great job, not just clock in and out. Incentivize people to want to take on projects that might not necessarily fall into their normal day to day roles, but will greatly help the product / clients. Learn to treat your employees AND clients with the respect and honesty they deserve. Start at the top and take a hard look at the numerous team members who left, and find the common denominators. When 10 people leave in the span of 2 months, red flags should be called out and changes should be made to correct issues. Don't just perform standard exit interviews and move on.
