Great people limited oportunity
|
Culture within the Toronto office is amazing however the same view is not shared of the corporate culture.
While we understand that things move fast and business decisions have to be made there is a complete lack of transparency on what is happening from a corporate level. This does not include managers and directors who are great to work with.
The company wants to make changes but don't want to do the work to make those changes happen.

Paying for your insurance will eat up the majority of your paycheck. Pay is substandard for the job type. Too many chiefs, not enough Indians. Co-workers are nice.

Technical company with many opportunities
|
A typical day for an application development manager would consist of 5 or more meetings per day. We also had weekly or biweekly one on ones with our developers. We rated ourselves monthly and checked those ratings against our manager's ratings for areas of improvement.
I was able to learn a lot about IVR (interactive voice response) technology and the multitudes of ways that it can be used and connected to the clients platform. I also learned a great deal about outbound processing, mainly voice and SMS messaging.
Projects were planned by the entire team and agreed upon delivery time and product extent. There were projects agreed upon outside the team, at times very large projects that made development teams and the QA teams work incredible hours including weekends. I had to pull employees off vacation to complete jobs.
I enjoyed the people, mostly the developers who worked hard and had many ways to improve projects and processes.

Leadership is a problem here. Many times is dogmatic, demeaning, etc..and when behavior problems are reported and widely observed they are still not addressed.
High stress, long hours, operational issues caused by lack of attention and upkeep on items that cornerstone platforms (or lack of understanding how these legacy systems work). Too much confusion about what they want to be to pay attention to the current client group.
Upside is the relaxed dress code, plenty of parking, reduced pricing for employee salad bar make it some of the stress more palatable. There are many employees there and some management that bring positive attitudes to what the job but there is much negativity as well.
Technology platforms are not being improved, which can lead to unnecessary downtime which affects clients moods, which affects morale.
Overall, leadership has not addressed the root issues that could turn the ship away from a mediocre company to an outstanding one.

No Direction from the Top Down

Before being acquired, the organization starting from the top down led to its demise. The organization had a lack of control as it doesn't expect timeliness or having accountability in any shape. The managers for the most part never gave constructive criticism and the training didn't allow for natural growth. Overall, this organization is in disarray as many senior members have left in the last year. The value of West is their "support" which doesn't mean a lot when you're going up against competitors who can offer their products and solutions at half the cost.

I've watched this company go from fun and exciting to dull and money grubbing selfish leadership. Everyone that I liked and cared about has left. Leadership only cares about money and that's it. They don't develop young talent and they don't care for it's employees like they say they do. Grateful for the time I was there and what I have learned but it was time to move on. Join this company if this is your last resort.
