Working at Discord can be a demanding experience that requires a combination of skills and hard work to thrive. While growth is an essential part of the job, it can take many different forms and is not solely tied to one's job title. Each day presents new challenges, and it's important to remember that Discord is a startup and, like any startup, we are learning and improving as we go. However, we are committed to doing our best for the company's sake.
If you're the type of person who thrives on challenge, is willing to work hard, and is eager to grow professionally, then Discord is an excellent place to work. We encourage our employees to get their hands dirty, take risks, and be creative. However, if you prefer to coast along without contributing or are not up for the challenge of working at a startup, then perhaps another workplace would be more suitable for you.

We've experienced a significant amount of change through the last few years which is expected for a pre-IPO company. My advice to leaders is to not lose sight of what makes Discord such a special place to work for.

It's a fun platform to use and your coworkers are generally really nice and supportive.
|
Management promises you growth opportunities, but you will never see them especially if you are a minority in anyway. They will take a great work culture and fire people until you are turning against eachother. People are over worked. The platform is understaffed. And management at all levels talks out of both ends. If you make a report of am HR issue, they let the person who you reported do your next performance review. They dangle a sabbatical at 5 years for mental health in front of you, but you'll never reach it. They will fire you before you can use it.

This is certainly the place for those who are looking to build creative solutions to problems that are not clearly defined, who want to lead teams and be a part of scaling an organization, and who want to work with people who genuinely care about their product.

All the same pros mentioned may be cons to some. This is certainly not the environment for those who cannot fly both high and low, who are risk-averse, and who are looking for something more comfortable and stable. Agility is a key skill needed to work here.
Leadership has not always got it right, especially as it pertains to product strategy. However, they have always owned up to their missteps and have been honest and open about how they can do better. At the end of the day, you have to remember that nobody has done what we are trying to doing, not even Jason Citron. We are going to try different things and fail, and that's OK. If you have the adaptability or if you have ever worked in a company with less than 1000 people, and if you want to push yourself to overcome interesting challenges, then you should work at Discord.
