Complete chaos, and a horrible place to work.

The days go by quickly because there is always a fire to put out. I no longer work here where I was underpaid and underappreciated.
|
The managers and publisher have no idea what is going on locally. The business is being run using excel sheets and Google docs because after 2 years they still can not get a working CRM. Without efficient systems for booking and tracking advertisers are very often overbilled or billed for advertising that never ran. Upper management dumps their responsibilities on everyone else because they themselves have no idea what is going on. Three years ago they brought in a new publisher who is completely burning this once great place to the ground. He is so ignorant he sent me an org chart with everyone's salaries exposing me to the fact that the new people I hired and trained were getting paid more than me, an employee of over 20 years. There is nowhere to turn here with an issue, management brags about how many HR complaints they have without any consequences. I feel really bad for my friends who continue to work in this truly awful place.

The only pros are the business is run so poorly that management never has an idea what's going on allowing you to stay on and fly under the radar. If you are alive and can talk you're an ideal candidate to work in this organization.

Getting your monthly sales goals 2-3 weeks after you've started your month. Very dishonest with commissions and likely to increase your goal out of nowhere if you're doing too well to not have to pay you. There are constant fire drills to interrupt what you are doing and focus on selling some poorly thought out sponsorship or lame print package. Upper management is completely absent and entirely disconnected from day to day operations. Also, this is a dying business barely staying afloat as more and more advertisers realize the print product is dead and circulation is pretty much half of what you are told it is. In addition to that management is basically a high school click that plays favorites and protects certain individuals regardless of how heinous their actions may be.

No increase in wages for the majority of the staff in over 10 years. Too few news stories and too many times the paper is grasping at straws to do what they can to stay afloat. Continually downsizing. Owned by Gatehouse Media - read those reviews for the best insight.

The coworkers at this company were helpful and professional. The paper was once a wonderful place to work.
|
Several buyouts later, the paper is now a shell of it's former self. Morale is low. The personality of the newspaper is gone. It has slowly but surely become centralized and outsourced by the new owners.
