Stressful, lack of customer service.

I worked at the Worcester Telegram for 23 years. The changing of ownership over the years has strongly been felt by the employees as well as the customers. The level of compassion for their employees and clients has decreased. It is a big corporate account now that only cares about the next big deal coming in to fill their pockets. They hire employees now based on employee referrals instead on experience and education. The lack of customer service is shown with the decrease of its customers. I would never recommend anyone for a position at the T&G now because of the stress that the management it under and they in turn can only turn the stress onto it's employees. The sales is never enough, they always want more.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette covers a large territory in regards to college and high school athletics. There was limited flexibility to be able to cover major events. Overall it was a decent working environment because the readership was high at the time and local teams were happy for any type of coverage. Problems that existed included early deadlines in which certain, important games would not be covered. Poor pay. A lack of creating and developing story ideas. Focusing primarily on one college (Holy Cross) and offering limited coverage on other area college programs. Showing a certain bias towards certain high schools over others. Management treated freelancers poorly and never offered praise.

This company is so poorly run that everyone is running in opposite directions with no known destination. Advertiser are less and less interested in buying overpriced prints ads. The other options is to sell very overpriced digital ads to be run by another company.

i was self-employed as a carrier. i would pick up my papers. sort them according to my route and then deliver. depending on weather conditions, i could deliver within a decent time frame. obviously, during inclement weather, it would take additional time. very rarely received complaints, had an awesome district manager and warehouse manager. due to personal reasons beyond my control was forced to leave. the customers were amazing.

Coworkers were the best!
|
Was a solid company prior to being sold to its current owner. Work was fast paced with multi-tasking a must. The culture was comfortable and somewhat laid back. Difficult to advance and the scheduling can be difficult when vacations hit. Working with great people was the most positive part of the job.

Low morale and contact staff reductions

The Telegram & Gazette has an excellent newsroom with many talented staffers but after years of staff reductions and over a decade without a pay increase, morale is very low. GateHouse Media takes advantage of the fact that news professionals are passionate about what they do, so they keep management hands tied and don't give employees a lot of reason to stay. The great talents that they have dedicated their careers to GateHouse in for many years will be leaving the industry to PR jobs because GateHouse does not invest in its employees. Employees at the executive level enjoy sizable bonuses year after year while the rest of the workers get a de-facto pay cut without even cost-of-living increase.
