A lot of effort has been made to introduce wellbeing initiative and organise company events, and the staff are treated as individuals when considering flexible working arrangements, etc. As a small company, there are plenty of opportunities to diversify your role and take on more responsibility. Nanoco employs mostly bright graduates and smart PhDs in junior and mid-level roles, so you'll be surrounded by capable scientists. The application process is quick and easy, as they often have vacancies that need to be filled (for reasons explained in the 'cons' section). The management are so annoying that you won't feel guilty about applying to better jobs at other companies while you're working there. The senior staff have astonishingly poor management skills. As soon as you went home you could shut off. Most of the staff are really nice and the lab had a very supportive atmosphere. The science of quantum dot production is not very well understood at the production facility, at least not by the mangers running the labs. The lab work is dull and repetitive and will leave you unfulfilled. The demand for the product is non-existent. The chemical processes are not optimised for anyone in the manufacturing process. The lab equipment and reactors are not reliable and frequently break down. This can be chemical pump failures to reactor software crashing as well as mischarging chemicals, not to mention probe malfunctions and seal ruptures. The managers will blame you for the reduced productivity. There is one on site engineer and he is overworked, meaning repairs are not rapid. Most of the management staff do not know how long any of the reaction take nor do they know how the equipment works, leading to often wild expectations. Decisions are made top down and none of the management work in the labs, it is difficult to receive quick decisions. There are strong expectations to do weekend work, however the company stopped paying overtime, much to the managers chagrin we therefore stopped working overtime. The HR department is also poorly run. Any changes to how you work are not communicated well or with any alacrity. The opportunity’s for progression are limited, you could be promoted to production leader but the pay is still low, and you unfortunately have to communicate with managers more often. Nothing else I started work on a Tuesday, my manager left for a two week holiday on the Friday and the other member of the team left the company on Thursday. Wednesday was spent at the other site in a corner doing cross referencing with a spreadsheet and the system. I received absolute minimum training with absolutely nothing to prepare me for the 2 weeks I'd be working alone. I was then handed several hard tasks to fulfill within those 2 weeks, however they were out of my job responsibilities and when I asked for help I was told to 'Just get on with it, I'll be fine' and that it had to be completed before she got back from holiday. I politely explained that I would be unable to complete the tasks as I have had no training in either the company procedures, rules and databases or in the projects I had to complete! The whole team had no idea how to train me or what I should be doing and they were paying WELL below the standard salary for my job title and for my age.
