Decent professional experience, but poor organizational changes and lack of transparency while there

Great as a stepping stone, but not much room for growth beyond your position. Was really happy there for some time, but within the last year they've made some really bizarre organizational changes from the top down, and with that came a loss of transparency and a total lack of communication. This ended up creating a really toxic and unstable work environment. They seem to place a lot of stock in certain (questionable) individuals and favoritism became apparent. Again, was a great company to work for for some years, and I worked with some fantastic individuals, but things have certainly changed.

See above - no room for upward movement. Unstable work environment. Started to feel really unvalued and the new management was extremely condescending.

Management is non-existent. Everyone on their phones. No one cares. If management doesn't care about what goes on at plant 120, they won't be in the label business much longer. Very sad situation.

Pay/benefits were in line with industry standard, but nothing special. HR was nice and seemed to care about educating employees. They give you a ton of free AstroNova t-shirts and stuff.

Everything else. Absolutely no training or formalized onboarding relating to job function. The culture is terrible. Senior leadership consists of old friends and people who have been there for 30+ years. Clueless to any progress in tech or business. Culture on the production floor is just as bad if not worse. High school-style drama with snobby and/or immature people. Management lacks either the skill or the willpower to manage their employees’ behavior. Want to change something for the better? Have a new idea? Forget about it, no one will deviate from the same series of button-pressing that they’ve been doing since the 90s. Most of the people in “office” job functions were equally unwelcoming if not flat-out rude if, god forbid, you ask them a question. Based on what job functions they hire for and push to succeed, they don’t even know what they actually need to improve. You don’t need 6 different old guys walking spouting “lean” buzzwords. You need people who understand and can control a production line, have the vision to move towards the future, and the management skills to motivate teams. But, to be fair, some of those teams may be hopeless. It’s hard to take pride in your work in this environment. Hey, at least there’s those t-shirts.

Get new management who have worked in companies other than Astro in the last quarter century. Have them work on issues from the ground up, not the top down. Hold employees, at all levels, accountable for their behavior. And if you hire new people, train them. And be nice to them. It’ll go a long way.
