Good business, good people, boring product
|
Apptio is a solid company with smart and, more importantly, kind people. The business is solid (though largely b/c of a lack of competition rather than superior product) and while upper management sometimes has some bad communication, in general, if you're an engineer here, you will have a high degree of job security. There were layoffs during Covid but they were relatively small and the company is both large enough and well run enough that they have a very safe position in the market.
The product is mostly legacy, corporate, sometimes mind-numbingly boring CRUD apps. There is some nuance and innovation happening, but a the vast majority is just run of the mill standard software engineering. You probably won't do the best work of your life here but it will be work and it will be relatively secure.
Compensation is decent but somewhat below market. No stock based compensation unless you are pretty high up the ladder. Other benefits are pretty standard for mid-tier tech.

Benefits were good, but after a couple of purchases, everything went downhill
|
When I started at Apptio, the culture was very open, and willing to listen to new ideas. The managers were caring, and helped those under them to learn and to grow.
That changed when the company was bought.
There became more of a sense of "we have to keep our secrets, so that we can't be replaced".
Turn over spiked, and management involvement tanked.
Would I have recommended Apptio as a place to work in 2019? Yes.
Current day, no. Avoid at all costs.

Good company overall

Good company overall. Unfortunately its been sold twice and with each sell , the work environment becomes worse and worse. At one point it was the best company to work for. I can't say the same anymore.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The benefits are great and the pay is higher than average. In my team at least, management is very human and treat you as a person first. Additionally on my team there is little supervision and no micromanagement, however management literally does not know what my job is actually supposed to so while it is nice to not be micromanaged, the flipside of that is having little to no training or anyone to ask for help regarding the position-- however, community channels allow individuals to interact with knowledgable parties that may or may not provide insight.
What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of documentation and training, management is composed of people who are mighty good at business and people, but perhaps less knowledgable about the job itself.
What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
fend for yourself, not for lack of good people but due to remote work and the vastness of the company. CEO has been noted for saying he is primarily interested in becoming a billionaire, this is evident in how priorities trickle down chain of command, though most management seems to care for their subordinates at the lowest levels
What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Some days everything is on fire, others it feels like there is nothing to do

Apptio is great conceptually, but much needs to improve. When I started there was no formal onboarding process which made me feel like I was always chasing information down. Most employees there are so over worked that they rarely share information, I don't believe it's because they do not want to, they just do not have the time to stop working. As a PM I found it frustrating to constantly tell customers that product on the roadmap where again be pushed out. During a customer meeting one customer representative told our team, "Apptio is like a teenager, there's a lot of potential but sometimes you struggle to realize what it is!"
