Company has overall a good culture if you land in the right team
|
|
1) Very transparent and zero micromanagement culture
2) Great focus on work life balance
3) Very good talent pool specifically with the US counterparts
4) Good tech stack to work on for developers in Platform teams
|
1) Not much work for India teams specifically in Platform Products and lack of mid to long term strategic guidance from leadership. Sometimes while providing guidance they may even forget that India teams also exist
2) Some of Engineering Managers and Leaders in Platform teams are NOT good and due to inherent forgiving culture of the organization they continue to work there but in turn making the lives of others very difficult. EMs can sometimes just be serving as mere scrum masters and only good at transferring blame from one person to other without taking any responsibility. They just want work for their teams without providing any good inputs
3) The engineering folks in India never consult the Product Org before hiring developers regarding the real resource need. They just hire whenever they get slightest opportunity to grow the team under them even when it's not required truly.

The overall culture of the company is too good and most of the US leadership is very respectful and well trained Managers as well. While hiring Indian teams please consider that they are also given good opportunities to work upon and stay motivated and the identification of opportunities should not be put on one or 2 scapegoats.
I am giving 3 stars just beacuse of my experience. I wanted to give 4 stars as overall I trust the mission of the organization and I know that overall the culture is too good.

Only a few mature leaders at the Exec Dir level in Product org.

Product Directors in the US micro manage SPMs in India. SPMs at Athena do a lot of BA work. There is no opportunity to prioritise, define value for roadmap features as it is all defined at the VP, Sr Dir and Dir levels. There is no growth path for SPMs. As an SPM, you'll prepare a lot of ppts and every slide, every line, every word will be reviewed, edited, dictated by your Manager if she is a Director in the us.

Reassess the tasks that SPMs are doing, move out a good number of them to PO or BA roles, hire people at that level. Let SPMs operate with the level of freedom that they deserve. Advise Directors to stop micro managing.
If you don't trust people in India to be capable of doing their job, please stop hiring in India and pay for SPMs and Engg teams in the us.
