Terrible experience
|
I worked remotely in the CSC for a little over a year (14 months). I have worked in healthcare my entire adult life; however, I can honestly say, hands down, that my position at athenahealth was the absolute WORST experience I have ever had with any company I've been employed by. The training was entirely disjointed and was an absolute joke. Chaos is the only word that comes to mind. It was 3 months of going over content and workflows at rapid fire pace, without being given any opportunity to digest, practice, or implement the material that we had had shoved down our throats so that we could gain a sense of understanding and at least some level of proficiency prior to moving on to entirely new content. It was downright impossible to retain anything that had been gone over with how fast, inconsistent, and all over the place training was. It was nearly impossible to follow.
Once you are out of training and "hive" and are out "on the floor" taking calls and chats on your own, good luck! If you are struggling on a call or a chat with a client, your available resources are VERY limited (despite being told all throughout training that you'll have all the resources and help in the world). The knowledge articles are a complete mess and their "help desk" doesn't respond 90-95% of the time, leaving you to our own devices and feeling stressed and overwhelmed since you are in a position where you are unable to help the client. The quality assurance expectations are ENTIRELY unreasonable and unrealistic. If they don't feel that you are "obsessing" over the clients and being excessively empathetic, you will lose many points on your QA score. If you don't understand the content and workflows and they don't feel that you provided the client with the best or correct information/resolution, you will be dinged for that as well. They will gaslight and berate you, making you feel as though YOU are the problem and that everyone else is far outperforming you. I have never undergone such an extreme level of scrutiny at any other job. It's honestly oppressive and suffocating. There is a significant amount of workplace bullying. I BEGGED my manager for additional training for MANY MONTHS, but he entirely failed to produce any sort of plan to help me learn this job and improve my performance. Every week during our meetings, he would ask me what I felt I needed to improve, and I repeatedly gave him the same answer, which was additional training and job shadowing, but those requests went largely ignored for many months. Finally, it got to the point where I was threatened with termination if I did not substantially improve. Thankfully, I was able to land a MUCH better gig and I resigned last week. It was THE BEST feeling in the world after 14 months of complete and utter missery working for this ridiculous company.
Lastly, athena employs a department called Workforce Management, who will monitor ALL of your bathroom breaks. They will literally message you on Microsoft Teams to see where you are. This is micromanagement to an EXTREME degree. I was told by my manager that if I needed extra bathroom breaks, I would have to get a doctor's note and request "special accommodations." Are you kidding me?! I wouldn't recommend this company to my worst enemy. There is a reason this company has such a high turnover rate in the CSC - they are IMPOSSIBLE to work for!

Bad for freshers
|
They work on some old age technology which is useless for your career. This place is dead. People don't interact apart from work. Senior management is a boys squad who doesn't involve anyone else. 60% of the employees are contractors, they only care for their work and nothing else. 0 team building activities. Everyone is scared of their respective managers.

Poor management
|
athenahealth has a culture of promoting excessive work ethic (well beyond 40/week) without gratefulness or recognition. Leadership is a "boys' club". Several managers react aggressively to criticism, promote obsolete work practices, and will bully an employee into apologizing to redirect blame off themselves. There is severe and obvious favoritism for individuals who only ever agree. The company has unlimited PTO, but discourages taking time off.
Culture of management aside, there are many talented and hard-working individuals working here, whom are more than willing to lend a hand or share their knowledge and experience. The workers of this company are its greatest asset.

casual dress code, positive remote work, kind hardworking coworkers

managers/ directors lack accountability for poor and often damaging decisions, and employees are overworked without appreciation for their effort

Fantastic place to work
|
The people and culture make a stressful role easier to digest. Unfortunately, a VC firm purchased a majority of the company and took it private which changed the leadership structure and a lot of great people who built the company from the ground up ended up leaving. Thoroughly enjoyed working with my team and coworkers - most were incredibly bright, engaging, and positive.

Overall a good company to workfor
|
athenahealth overall has a good culture, but there is definitely variation depending on the subdivision or team. The company’s mission is engaging and everyone I’ve encountered in my time here is passionate about what they do.
There are definitely certain areas where they are lacking in their product and although they say those areas are part of the strategy, I have yet to see much action taken towards those areas.
