Low wages, unresponsive management, little to no advancement available

I, almost immediately, became our store's top seller for magazines and in my first week (during double spiff week around Christmas) made a little over $100 in spiff for that week. The GM said that in all their time there (~5 years) they had never seen anyone make that much in one week, even during triple spiff. The AGM at the time was pushing hard for me to either get promoted or get a raise for consistently making the company more money than anyone else. However, nothing changed and when the higher ups came to the store and said that we didn't need more pay than $8.50/hr because "the spiff we get will cover that" but that is just blatantly not true; I was consistently the top preformer and never made more spiff than I did my first week. I had to get a second job before entirely leaving just to be able to afford my bills. The turnover rate is high, pay is low, almost no advancement unless they're desperate.

Apply if you want to hate your job

Harrisonburg BAM current staff was terrible. Management went downhill after the caring and supportive staff left last year. Managers talk bad about, gaslight, and ignore the requests of their employees. The discount is nice (B&N staff gets 40%) but be prepared to hate your job. It is such a depressing and draining environment with bad management. The lower level staff is nice though because they too are just trying to get by. Lots of the customers are creepy/registered offenders who are very inappropriate to the young female workers, but the managers don't do much to help/ban them.

Good place for a book worm, bad for paying rent
|
I do love working somewhere surrounded by books. Most of my coworkers are wonderful and I am genuinely happy to be there with them. But nothing can make up for the fact that we are all drowning in debt. One of my coworkers hasnt been able to afford electricity in her home for 11 months. Three of my coworkers live at home and are still struggling to pay the bills. One has been trying to buy a car for 3 years. No amount of little gift cards, and employee discounts can make up for the fact that we are stressed out everyday of our lives trying to pay our bills. Aside from that i do love it there. If we were paid a living wage i would work there forever. I love talking books with customers and recommending my favorites and having them come back and tell me how much they love them. I love the way people feel comfortable in a bookstore and contributing to that with them. I love my coworkers. But I would love it more if we were able to live without the stress of wondering if our bills were going to get paid that month.

Extremely low, non-competitive pay. Manager turnover is incredibly high due to large workload and low pay--most managers are paid less than $14/hr, except GMs. Sales expectations are unheard of in retail--a paid membership, magazine subscriptions, and at least 1 other sales promo being pushed at all times. BAM is always well-intentioned, but misses the mark all the time with operations directives. IT equipment is extremely outdated and constantly breaking, including registers. Severe lack of training, zero training payroll so problems just accrue over time and get passed on. All things are considered less important than BAM, including family and children. Poor to nonexistent work/life balance for managers. And you're expected to tolerate everything and get paid less than a Walmart cashier. But at least there are books and (Sometimes) working AC.

They donât mind what you do as long as you get your job done. Some of the employees are kind of stand offish, but overall no drama. The Store Manager will become cold and mean to you once you put in 2 weeks/quit.

the customers in particular are so rude sometimes, you get paid so little, and the managers get so much put on their shoulders. the managers are so kind and caring and get so much stress put on them.

Awful Management, Pay, Schedule

The gm of the store will never give a compliment to his overworked staff. Nothing was ever good enough. I was part-time but scheduled almost every day. I was so overworked I ended up getting COVID-19 and then the flu. I only made $8 an hour. My coworkers were the best part of working, but not enough to keep me there. I only worked for maybe a month before I left and never went back. The GM is one of the worst people.
