Lack of pay, High turnaround rates, No space for career growth, Awful management

You work with some amazing people. Pretty much all the engineers, designers and developers are brilliant and are some of the best people you'll ever work with. The office environment is laid-back (flip flops and a t-shirt type deal) which is awesome.

The lack of pay outside of management roles is disturbing. Friends working similar jobs in other industries make double what myself and my colleagues make (I understand the outdoor industry can't pay like aerospace or biomed but DOUBLE?). 401k match is also a joke at 3% match for 6% contribution. Turnaround rates are high, people leaving all the time for better opportunities elsewhere, recently a bunch of severances for "leaning out". This leads product development teams to be stretched thin, corners are cut to meet project deadlines, projects are late, etc. Management is run by a boys club that believes the key to a successful company is unrealistic margins, endless meetings and egos.

You need to show gratitude and support to your incredible employees that are keeping the lights on. Better pay, more support (hire more design team members) so we can start making good products again. Present opportunities for people to grow their career so they don't need to leave and get re-hired five years later for the raise they want.

Set realistic expectations and you will have a great time.

The people are truly fantastic. Even with the revolving door of employees leaving and returning many life long friendships are built here. Just make sure not to equate the people to the work and get suckered in to thinking to stay in the community you have to continue sacrificing for the brand.
Understand that the work-life balance toted in interviews is what you make it. If you say yes to everything you will end up swamped. It seems to take many new employees a few years of trying hard before they realize that upward mobility and comp increases are completely random and have very little basis on merit. Make sure to get out and ski and climb (Sometimes your boss will be out there too). It's fairly great for family focused individuals on certain teams as some managers are very flexible.
New President Neil is finally out from under the shadow of previous bad leadership. He has refreshed a lot of leadership in product that had been stagnant for a long time as well. I do think he will do a great job if he is allowed to, be aware that he still answers to the private equity company Clarus that owns BD.
Pro deals are great and you will rub elbows with many industry folks which makes it a great place to work for experience and networking in the industry.

Compensation is lower and workload higher than other similar positions. Expect finding it necessary to leave after a few years to "boomerang" back with more experience in order to get any sort of upward mobility.
Burnout is common here due to the workload on certain teams and individuals being much higher due to short tenure. Can definitely feel like a boy's club at the top still but that attitude is shifting.

The brand is important and valuable but the days of employees having ownership and interest because they loved it left the day Clarus was brought in. If you want to be a corporate player then corporate benefits and incentives are required.
