Interesting work, decent pay, but there are some issues.

True ability to work on the cutting edge and learn a lot about engineering principles, vacuum theory, CVD processes, exotic materials. Great team of brilliant and friendly engineers. Managers are very nice and know a lot. Flexible hours (as long as you work enough of them). Vertically integrated so you will be able to follow a project from kickoff to completion. Under good upper management who has a vision and plan for growing the business.

Schedules are tight and engineering generally takes the fall for late releases. You’ll often hear in the planning stages “this needs to be on a compressed/aggressive schedule” from upper management. Very much a point-the-finger culture. There used to be a great emphasis on communication and there were company wide quarterly meetings to assure this…these no longer exist. Drafting department was taken away which decreases general engineering productivity. Vacation days accrued weekly and unable to roll over more than a week so you will always be vacation day poor. The company will sometimes close the week of Christmas for which you must use your own vacation days. This however is not planned far in advance so it is unclear whether or not you should save days for this. Company hasn’t made money in awhile which is not comforting.

We enjoy being communicated with. Allow us to have all of our vacation days at the beginning of the year, days must be approved by management anyway so there is not a good chance of people abusing this. Allow for more comfortable project schedules, the constant go go go is taxing and may cause good talent to leave.

Excessive amount of long term employees with little outside knowledge or formal training. Awareness of basic management, manufacturing and business concepts is lacking. There are a lot of obsolete paper process.

Great company with years of proven success with a portfolio of interesting technology.

There is a ton to learn if you want to. The company is not so big that you’ll get pigeonholed and not so small that you’ll get sidetracked doing things beneath your pay grade. Management is nice and generally wants you to succeed. Leadership is new, pushing the company to grow and keeping their employees at the forefront of this effort. I highly recommend working here.

Managers often have their own jobs to work on too, so you’ll find yourself having less guidance at times when the company is busy. There are also a lot of rules of the facility: the process of clocking in is a bit much, no Wi-Fi for employees, you aren’t allowed to stream music on your computer as you work. Sometimes the company will make you take your own vacation time for mandatory company holidays.
