Abysmal Leadership
Most coworkers are kind and smart. The campus is beautiful and next to the water.
Company leadership is authoritarian and old fashioned. Mistrust is rampant. Employees endure constant micromanagement from the VP Level and C-Suite and the persistent threat of consequences for mistakes. Leadership is clueless as to how to support and empower employees. It makes the work environment tense and everyday life in the job frustrating and depressing.

Beware it's worse than you can imagine
Competitive compensation, good benefits, and nice CA campus.
Many nice and well-meaning employees trying to do their best under impossible circumstances.
C-suite management is arrogant, unprofessional, not capable/qualified for their roles, and only self-interested.
The company has created an illusion of openness and stability to prospective employees that is well crafted but misrepresents how the company actually functions, which is in a constant state of chaos with C-suite micromanagement throughout the organization. This results in under/mis-informed decision-making being the norm, undermining of upper and mid-level management, and constant flux across every dimension of the organization, which leaves most employees in a constant state of exhaustion and disillusionment.
The company does not have a forward-looking vision or strategy, only a series of reactions to the latest crisis that are self-made due to poor/inadequate planning. For instance, the company opened a research site in Pennsylvania and closed it in less than a year from the doors opening. This illustrates how dramatically and whimsically the company functions and makes huge decisions to invest and then divest. The company treats employees as widgets that can be hired and fired with little regard to the impact on their lives.

The board of directors would be smart to remove the current C-suite and start over. Toxic culture, rampant micromanagement, constant pivots, unclear strategy, and no vision - leadership starts at the top and leaders lead by example - there is none to speak of from the current C-suite at this company and don't be fooled to think otherwise.

Diversity is a Checkbox at Exelixis
Most of the people at Exelixis are there for the right reasons, for the science, and for the patients. They work hard to bring medicines to market so that patients can have healthier lives. I sincerely believe that.
Leadership at the top does not believe in Diversity. Look at the Commercial organization. White men. That is the way is has always been. And not even smart white men. They don't interview diverse candidates, and they don't pretend otherwise. HR doesn't involve themselves in the process, and they don't insist that the process change. Perhaps not that the head of HR is changing, it will be different, but doubtful. Considering that DEI just started at Exelixis within the last two year, I'm not sure what is to be expected, but it is all just to check the box so the outside world believe that diversity will change at this company. But if anyone were to really dig deep, they would see that there anything but a belief that this is a life science company that believes in diversity. This is a company that operates like a start-up with a dictator at the helm who involves himself in every decision at every level. None of the Executive level has experience working at a true life cycle company, and that is why Exelixis is where it is.

Have the leadership team at Exelixis actually understand what Diversity means when it comes to their workforce. Stop making your employees define diversity and explain what it means to be marginalized. Those at the top with all the privilege walk around with rose-colored glass on making all of these executive decisions without really understanding the effect they are having on people,

Excellent pay and benefits; nice to have snacks and fruit available. Lovely work space

Micro management unlike any other. Not matter your level, you are not empowered to make any decision. It has to go up the chain. Very defeating. Good competent people are hired and not allowed to perform the job to their potential

No Culture - No Work - No Passion
Nice coworkers. Generally smart people who like to work hard.
There is no company culture, if there was I would say it is "distrust." The work is so split and fragmented with no clear focus. It is hard to care or become passionate when you get switched between projects and priorities are changed at the last minute. Scientists who care are left high and dry and scientists who don't turn just turn into a cog in the machine. This is a place if you really don't care about your work and just want a paycheck, though it pays slightly less that competitors for a much more dangerous location (coworkers cars were confirmed stolen during the workday). Go here if you want your career to hit a dead end.
