The people are amazing. Everyone works incredibly hard and is truly nice and helpful when asked… if they have time.
The product you get to work with is so fun and diverse. The fan base is so passionate and loyal - they immediately make you feel like you make a difference for them by adding a small slice of joy (or pain) to their day.
Benefits - Their commitment to giving off the week between Christmas and New Years was great and desperately needed for sanity each year.
|
Funko Fast - Be prepared to sprint from the moment you start Day 1. Minimal to no documentation for training and you just have to learn things they hard way… by asking X person who is the only one who knows X process.
Leadership is extremely out of touch but there is clearly a large shift happening of ushering out old and bringing in new. There is little to no leadership training for people managers and it really shows. Morale is openly low, often, and surveys openly communicate the issue but it appears to be ignored.
Little to no planning or roadmapping to help organize the chaos despite people trying to internally. It’s almost as if they want to keep it chaotic just because it’s “Funko”. You may be working on 5 priorities at once and get 2 on fire issues where you have to drop everything at once. The GIF PIVOT from Friends was used often as well as the term “trauma bonding” if that helps gauge the level of chaos daily/weekly.

The change in leadership was desperately needed and I look forward to seeing what new leadership can bring.
Prioritize real leadership training so people who manage employees now how to truly support their people.
Prioritize real road map planning and contingency plans for inevitable urgent issues. Have upper level management (Director level and up) actually meet across departments regularly to help with cohesion and collaboration. It’s WAY too siloed.
If you’re going to make employees be in office don’t let all senior leadership NOT work in office… way too many leaders work remote and their teams don’t and it’s crappy given the “collaboration” reason for being in office.

CEO + Upper Management way out of touch
|
|
The strength of this company is the designers, working with incredible IP.
|
They run the company like it's a small business still, even though it's a global behemoth now. So if so-and-so goes on vacation, no one knows how to do something and everyone has to wait until they get back. During the pandemic the President constantly talked about how great it is WFH, meanwhile we were cramped in an office watching the company meeting there. We did not need to be there, especially during covid. Meanwhile the CEO was on his yacht or mansion in CA (we were all in WA). Last thing I'll say is the pay is WAY TOO LOW. It was less than minimum wage in Seattle, for a corporate company position, with no benefits. $17 an hour?

Tipping point
|
|
• Most people are hardworking and want to get things done
• Ability to forge your own path (caveat being it depends on your management)
• Company is not afraid to fail and try new things
|
• Inefficient processes and tools. While it's getting better, we manage far too many things in spreadsheets and the one "source of truth" is accurate maybe 25% of the time.
• Hybrid or remote work policies are not consistent. Good candidates are passed over due to needing to be onsite while their boss doesn't even work in the same state. Sends a mixed message.
• While the interim CEO and CFO/COO have done amazing things to turn the company around, there are still some very weak leaders that are more concerned about how they look to the CEO vs. actually making the right decisions for the brand.

The company culture is at a tipping point. A lot of good has been done with leadership changes, but some of the new leaders being brought in are fostering a toxic, competitive, and inefficient culture that has, and will continue, to cause people to leave. If multiple teams and people are echoing the same sentiment, it might be time to listen.

Great Culture, benefits, co workers, and immediate leadership. Good work life balance and very understanding of life outside the office

Poor top level Leadership through (early 2023) that tried to do too much too fast and wasn’t even located close to the headquarters so were rarely around.

Wildly Disorganized and Political
|
|
There were very little pros. I only stayed as long as I did because of the health benefits it provided for my family. If I had to identify one or two things it would be the following:
- good, affordable benefits
- since it’s a newer company, you’ll get to be a part of a lot of foundational projects and are there to help get things launched and off the ground which can be interesting.
|
The con list is too long to write in full detail, but the main one is that this company is founded and run by a small, impenetrable clique at the top that doesn’t care about anyone beneath them. When I say “beneath them”, I’m not just speaking of analysts or entry/mid level roles. I’m referring to anything under an SVP. Leadership treats everyone like cattle and in my 15+ years as a professional have never experienced such attitudes and general disdain for employees from leadership. They borderline run a caste system and refuse to even look in your direction if you’re anything less than an SVP. This alone should deter anyone from working at an organization. Some other honorable mentions:
- EVERY single decision is top down. Teams are left with little to no autonomy to suggest improvements or guide projects unless they’re specifically requested by the leadership clique at the top. Senior leadership for the most part has only ever worked at Funko, or spent a majority of their career there and as a result are ironically both sheltered and inexperienced.
- everything is “Funko fast” which is a negative descriptor the IT employees came up with to describe how things are done there. Extremely quickly, expensively, and incorrectly. During my 3 year tenure I saw multiple big budget projects that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars have to be stopped and scrapped simply because of mismanagement
-little to no collaboration between teams cross functionally. Everyone seems to be competing with each other and no one goes the extra mile to help anyone. I’ve never heard “that’s not my job” from so many different people, so often despite the task or question at hand very much fitting their title or role.
- terrible budgeting skills by leadership. Everything costs an inordinate amount of money unnecessarily due to inefficiencies and lack of experience from those at the top. When they spend too much, employees deal with the consequences. My last year there I saw THREE rounds of layoffs. Those layoffs of course didn’t impact any SVPs or higher. Just the ones at the bottom that have no say in what or how things get done. I had to leave the org after I saw how people were treated and the terrible severance packages they received (3 weeks pay).
- One would think that with the constant influx of new people, innovation is at the forefront, but it’s quite the contrary. Given leadership, things will be done the same old (wrong) way despite how hard you try to change or improve things
The list continues but hopefully that paints a picture of the madhouse that is Funko.

Fire every single person at the top and start from scratch. Leadership is the exclusive problem as to why this company is consistently failing despite having one of the strongest consumer markets out there. Listen to what customers and employees are saying instead of taking the “we know better approach” because that’s clearly not the case as is represented in your stock price.

Warning!
|
|
Some free product. Some nice coworkers. Not many.
|
Please don’t work here. It sounds “fun” but it’s not, what could be so bad? Leadership. Is. So. Bad. They have brought in so many horrible leaders and “experts” who are just clueless. They don’t understand the product or culture. They are just inherently bad people, who have used nepotism to hire other bad people. Aggressive behavior - it’s constant competition, internally. Mainly just to be right. Few people are collaborative or helpful. HR is awful, excuse me, people and culture. Who know nothing about people. They protect their friends and everyone else is thrown to the wolves. They don’t properly conduct investigations and you usually have no idea who your rep is. Lay offs are constant, just to be fired and replaced by someone a quarter as qualified 6 weeks later. The product is repetitive and lacks any type of creativity, basically what old relics in merch think is popular. Who are basically all the same background, how diverse. Avoid marketing, the head of marketing is a terrible, terrible human. They have made so many bad decisions, how they are employed is wild. They talk about past roles like it’s still current. Completely oblivious to pop culture. Lies constantly. Actively brags about being cruel to people below them, speaks down to people and then puts on a robotic show to those above. With a corporate lingo flair. This company has a lot to figure out and I think it starts with the big paychecks. Who actively do very little and don’t live near any office. Yet, you have to go in. You’ve been warned!
