After the acquisition of Shari's Berries by 1-800-Flowers, a lot has changed. The company has accelerated growth dramatically and re-positioned the brand. Everyone is very collaborative and always looking to do the right thing. It has been the best work experience I have had in my career.

Not many, the holidays always get busy but that is part of the seasonality of the gifting space.

Free strawberries were offered to us in the break room that they otherwise would have thrown away.
|
The pay was $10/hr as I remember. I was a temp working in 2019 prior to Valentine's Day, their biggest holiday. They didn't offer us breaks. They expected us to work 5 hours straight wothout one. I demanded one, and they gave it to me. I tried to persuade the other workers to go on break with me, but they wouldn't. If they had stood up for themselves, they would have gotten a break too. The workers were mostly young white kids, Puerto Ricans of all ages, and a few blacks. One guy was wearing too much warm clothing for the rigorous non-stop motions we had to do and began to sweat profusely, causing him to stink badly. I had the misfortune of having to stand near him, which wasn't fun. I stood as far away as I could.
While putting the boxes together, manager marvelled at my method, wondering how I did it so fast. It was my first day, and I imagine she had been there a while without hacking the putting together boxes thing.
The middle manager asked me if I liked repetitively dipping strawberries in chocolate. It is common in Lancaster for managers of temps to give them the worst jobs and then ask them how much they like it. It is sadistic if you ask me.
The best part was when they had us lined up and a worker kept barking orders at us to make us keep the pace in packing boxes. She was in drill sargent mode.
They often sent us home early, denying us 8 hour's worth of work. In their minds it is privilege to do the job. Not in mine or any other sane person.

Very simple jobs, and the line worked fast enough that time went by fairly quick. Employees were friendly, although most did not speak English while at work.

Can get boring doing the same repetitive task every day, but it is a seasonal position.
