If you let your dispatcher know in advance of your plans and when you need time off they will do everything they can to make sure it happens. My dispatchers and planners have done this for me from the moment I was acquired by Heartland Express form GTI. If you are willing to be a TEAM PLAYER and understand that you are helping Heartland Express's customers succeed, then you will do well here. There were a few times when I was over the road and I didn't have cell service with my phone, nor was there a pay phone near by so I could contact my family and let them know I was shutting down for the night and everything was ok. I requested of my dispatcher over their computer if they would contact my wife and let her know I was ok, and I was shutting down for 10 hours. They were happy to do this for me, they know that a happy driver is a productive driver. This make being over the road a little easier knowing that my family doesn't have to worry if I'm ok. If you talk to you dispatcher and make them aware of any problems that may arise, they'll do what they can to help you. There were a couple repair bays and a drive through inspection lane. The repairs done in our shop were minor, mostly tires, lights and D.O.T. inspections. The occasional brake job came along and some light welding, but not much else. I had been a mechanic for a few years when I started with Heartland, but was only paid $10/hour, regardless of my experience. The work days were long and tedious, with no paid time off to speak of and no room for advancement. Needless to say I found a better job quickly. There are many trucking companies who claim they care but Heartland truly does. Hands down the best!😆I wish I found them years ago. My future for myself & my family will be Heartland Express! Things have gotten worse over the years but it is still a good job for someone that doesn't mind being a cog in the wheel or staying out for six days and being home one. Overall the company is better then others I have been to. The driver managers that I had was pretty easy to work with. The equipment was decent the loads were slacking a little bit . although some weeks were better then others. The salary position. I got home every weekend,and always drove a brand new truck. The staff worked with my needs. To anyone thinking about Heartland as a career,I say you won't find a company who treats you better. If not for a family emergency,id still be there.If you are a good safe driver who does a good job,then Heartland is the place you wanna be .
