They treat them badly. Especially if you're production, even though you make the show happen, you get treated as the bottom of the barrel. Paid minimum and with no balance between work and life. My best friend passed away and the next day I came into to work, I told my manager I wasn't feeling the best because of what happened the day before, and my manager said "you need to start prioritizing your work over your at home life". For minimum wage and no appreciation- I refuse to prioritize that job over my best friend passing away. They also hire more people as 2 hrs under full time when they start up so they don't have to pay for your benefits and consider you part time. No pros. On top of working weekends, you’re also having to work with some of the long time anchors - telling them what and when to do something - while they make 3 or 4 times more than you. You’re also working either nights or mornings. So from 3 pm to 11 pm or early mornings from 2 am to 10 am. You can make more at Target with a much better work life balance. It definitely makes sense why so many coworkers and other people I know in news have left the industry. With that being said, I feel as though I have hit a wall and gained all I can from working here. There is unfortunately no real potential for growth. My days are 90% extreme boredom with literally no work to do. I am grateful for the 2 days a week we can work from home. Truly, the job could be fully remote. But, there’s a lot of drama throughout the station and the management isn’t great. They tend to do these sweeping changes with little regard for the amount of extra work they’re causing and allow rumors to spread with out addressing them. Currently the morale is really low at my station due to an extra show being added and rumors of lay offs and department reductions/eliminations. (I’ve definitely had worse working in this industry). That being said you will work straight on some show (newscasts or lifestyle shows depending on your shift) from the time you walk in until you leave. If no one is out on vacation or taking a sick day, then a lunch break will happen at a decent time like the middle of your shift instead of close to the end of your shift (if at all). Get the highest per hour rate you can when you’re hired, and work all the OT you can as it is available, because raises will only be one to two percent every year regardless of performance.
