Successful US Manufacturing business (cleaning chemicals for boats, RVs, cars, and more), environment friendly, public.

Nice laid back work place, with all the pros of a publicly traded company (SEC financial reporting, press releases, international), as well as all the pros of a family owned company (quick decision making, business casual dress code, focus on business rather than on budgeting exercises).
The nice open work ambiance makes up for the lower than market salaries and limited benefits.
There was no 401K matching. I have not seen the receipts that make donations tax deductible, however employees were encouraged to make donations to charity, matched by the company.

Too much lay back and tolerance in the HR area ends up hurting the new hires, including the ones with degrees and experience.
They promised that they would enroll me in their health insurance, had me fill the paperwork, took the premium out of my payroll starting with my first month of work, but two months later I received a letter from BCBS thanking me for joining but notifying me that due to 63 days lapse in insurance, me and my kids would be excluded for the next twelve months for all preexisting conditions, including respiratory issues that might be considered as consequences of allergies by BCBS, i.e. H1N1 complications. I had H1N1 some months later and we did have preexisting respiratory allergy issues in my family.
Fourteen months after I had started working there, the same person notified me in writing that I would not be granted any single PTO... this year either. Unlike anybody else in the company and despite the employee handbook. They "fixed it", of course after the summer once they all got back from family summer vacations except me (and my kids of course): somewhere in October they told me that I "could take as much personal time" as I needed.
I learned: in some cultures, just doing a great job and asking nicely will not be enough to get you what was promised to you, it takes other skills and sacrifices.

I have made all my suggestions to the management when I was working there. I strongly doubt that the CEO is the problem: if the CEO had to take care of everything, what are other employees paid for?
