The less-businessy departments were generally very chill. It took me way less than 8 hrs/day to do what they asked of me and then some, and they were super happy with me. It's a very pleasant office environment in a cute space with snacks and cold brew on tap! There are frequent corporate after-work gatherings that are free and fun. I liked my team and the other interns a lot. We got to use the $50/month wellness stipend, which was awesome. I learned a ton about the industry. Having talked to others who have interned in clean energy in Houston and elsewhere, we clearly had the best experience in terms of community, opportunities, compensation, and actually having things to do. They regularly hire back interns as full-time employees, and I would have come back if I was staying in the industry. Definitely take an internship with Pattern if you're interested in the renewables industry, but maybe try to get placed at a different office--you can probably negotiate it.

The world revolves around the developers; they're the only ones who are allowed to drive projects and have original ideas. Your experience will be very department-specific; some are very intense and expect long hours, and you can't log overtime as an intern. Houston in the summer sucks, and you absolutely need a car. My work felt disconnected from actually addressing climate change. The company touts DEI but all of the management is male, mostly cishet white abled Christian men.
