Easy work
The job was easy. Not much to it overall. Running the day to day of the office for the mobile clinics. Keeping the office running and rigs stocked.
No room for growth. Low pay, constant turnover with clinic assistants due to looooong hours and low pay. Always cancelled clinics due to no doctors and angry stores because of cancelled clinics

Great place to network
Great place for current veterinary students to come and gain basic experience and network with current veterinary contractors.
A lot of moving parts, so communication and understanding between corporate, management and VCAs isn't the best. There is a lot of personal drama, not just with VCAs, but with management and corporate too. Not a lot of opportunity to move up in the business. Not many incentives to drive top notch performance so work ethic with staff becomes sub-par.

Rewarding but quick to burnout
The work was incredibly draining but management understood and listened and generally did what they could to help, Fulfilling to help pets and clients in need.
Long hours with limited ability for breaks due to being understaffed and incredibly busy. First-come first-served mindset for a veterinary clinic is good in theory but in practice leads to long wait times, anxious pets and rude owners.

Great idea poor execution. Company lacking in medical and business ethics
The wellness center model in a retail space is a viable and needed option to increase access to preventative care and keep cost low for the average cat/dog owner.
Execution of claimed company goals is poor. Access to care and gold standard care are promoted as top values of the services side of the company, yet when it comes to executing these core values veterinary leadership and veterinarians are completely ignored and underutilized due to “lack of business experience”. DVMs are constantly told that things that are standard of care cannot be provided due to cost such as tools to check intraocular pressure yet are still forced to offer an eye package in their center.
Instead of focusing on resolving the medical problems currently faced by wellness centers new services are added and rebranded such as a “hygiene” model that is a over glorified grooming service being added into space of some centers.
Operating in multiple retail partners with multiple branding is confusing to clients and there is no consistency of standards of operation between pop up ”community” clinics and wellness centers. Up to my final day I still never received a clear explanation of how it was okay for a vitals check to be satisfactory for prescription preventatives in a community clinic yet a full physical exam is to be required at a wellness center. Often leading to owners coming to our wellness center with their past preventative box listing refills wanting them filled to be denied due to not having a VCPR with the wellness center.
There is questionable use of DVM licenses to fill prescription preventatives at PetIQ’s online pharmacy that not all DVMs are aware of when working with the company as an associate or independent contractor. I had worked in both capacities and was not aware my license would be used to fill medications without their review until after the fact. Senior leadership attitude toward this was DVMs were be a nuisance wanting to have a physical exam within the last year prior to filling heartworm prevention.
I think it speaks volumes that when the Chief Medical Officer left they were not replaced. Leading to a conflict of ethics since a non medically trained or licensed individual is having the final say over medical standards and operations.

Hire a new Chief Medical Officer. Utilize your DVM medical leadership more and stop focusing on short term profitability. Veterinary clinics take years to establish cliental and become profitable. Give your teams the time and consistency to show you this model can work when guided by licensed veterinary professionals.
