Colleagues at all levels are approachable, supportive and generally happy to help. It creates a great environment to learn in. It's cliche to say, but my favorite part about working at Prospect is the people I get to work with. I enjoy working with other smart, hard-working professionals. Senior leadership is strongly encouraging everybody to return to the office and smoothing the transition with perks like lunch (almost every day) and bagels on Monday. While I know many people were content to work from home, I'm happy to see more people back in the office.

Prospect is a place where you will only get as much out of it as you put in. A lot of the onus is on the individual to connect with colleagues and to solicit feedback following deals and transactions. If you don't put the effort in, you can get lost.

I came to Prospect thinking I would learn the ropes then get my MBA. After one year at Prospect, I already know more about business and finance than my friends graduating from top business schools. My MBA friends now have significant debt to pay off. I am buying my dream apartment. If you enjoy getting paid while learning from some of the most experienced people in the LBO and credit businesses, you should give Prospect a hard look.

I wish the Prospect interview process could be completed in a day, but then I doubt Prospect would have the high calibre people that make Prospect a great firm, the leading independent private and equity and debt firm.

Mentoring and Career Development for Real at a Firm that Cares

Prospect management takes seriously their obligations to look after the career development of younger people. Just this morning, I see CEO John Barry helping a young associate learn the ropes in this high performance business. I did not see that happening at my last two jobs, and have not heard of that happening elsewhere. At Prospect's annual Killington outing (Prospect paid for everything for my whole family except my gas and ski tickets), CEO Barry publicly thanked Prospect people for their contributions, and then the next night publicly thanked all the workers at the Killington Grand, introducing them one by one in the ballroom and asking each to say a few words. I bet those Killington workers never received so much attention. No wonder lifties and other workers seeing my Prospect hat and vest would say, this year as in past years, "You're from Prospect? Welcome back!". How many firms care about shareholders and employees, but also others in the ecosystem, including those less fortunate? Whenever any employee here supports a charity, we all know that Prospect will multiple match employee contributions, sometimes 10:1. Prospect is a demanding high performance firm that offers huge opportunities to anyone making the effort. Competing with Blackstone and other larger companies, Barry says we have to be two steps ahead of the crowd, and we are. If you are interested in DIE, how many firms are 50% female at the C Suite?

Working at Prospect is night and day compared to my last job at a competing private equity shop. At my last job, I was expected to be on call 24/7 even to correct typos in an investment presentation for a vice president. No one cared about my career progression, work life balance, or if I enjoyed the job in any way. No one ever said "thank you". All major decisions were made behind closed doors. I was told again and again, "That's Wall Street". Fortunately, a recruiter called me to suggest I consider Prospect, and I accepted a position at Prospect a year ago (after completing a thorough reciprocal evaluation process separating the wheat form the chaff). What a difference from my prior job! Everything at Prospect is conducted in the open, where every member of the firm can participate, no matter how new or how junior. While firmwide pipeline calls three times a week are largely in the past, that spirit of openness continues. Just reading emails on deals is giving me a Prospect MBA! At Prospect, my contributions are encouraged, appreciated and respected. CEO John Barry says his favorites venture capital story is the Emperor's New Clothes, where only the youngest person in the room can see the truth and others should listen. People listen to you here, and respectfully. Prospect recruits people from all backgrounds and gives everyone the support needed to succeed. Prospect believes it takes on a special obligation when Prospect hires anyone. CEO John Barry says, "Everyone here is handpicked by me to join our firm., and I intend to see everyone succeed." That's why turnover is so low. Once you get here, you get to see firsthand what Barry means. Barry is heavily invested in the success of everyone working here. When an employee struggles, Barry will take that employee under his wing, coaching him or her to success. I am one of the people who first struggled in this high performance environment. I am still here, and flourishing, because Barry took the time to mentor me. A senior managing director told me Barry mentored him to success ten years ago. I did not see that happening at my prior firm, where I felt like cannon fodder. Prospect was one of the first pioneers in ESG investing, going back to 1988, as Barry says, "even before ESG had a name." Barry's foundation is the largest and steadiest funder of minority scholarships in New York, maybe in the world. Barry Scholarships at Oxford are more prestigious than Rhodes Scholarships. Barry is always looking for ways to make the world a better place for all, starting with the most vulnerable. If you want to make a difference, I cannot think of a better place than Prospect.

Jobs are like friends: either you look for the best in what you have or you tip toward the negative. I have been at Prospect for over 10 years. Prospect is a vibrant, forward thinking environment. Lots of ideas. Lots of energy. What you see is what you get in a high performance environment with a equally high performance track record. If you look at middle and senior management, you will see incredibly dedicated, smart people with long tenures. Prospect hires good, friendly people. And they are my friends.
