Ping pong table creates a noisy environment
|
I've never been in a corporate environment like Raven Industries. In IT people rarely talk to each other and you don't get the sense that your coworker has your back. You also get a sense that you could get fired for any reason at any time It is a right-to-work state and Raven takes that for granted especially with COVID-19. Leaders do not practice what they preach in regards to customer service. I found the environment was wounded by the 7 or 8 people who left prior to my employment as all that knowledge went out the door and wasn't written down. It wasn't an environment that you could be supported by learning form your mistakes, instead things were held against you in a very "pass the buck" structure.. An organization that is not big on documentation so you learned by failing and I'd be fine with that if empathy or direction to improve was shown. As an employee you were creating the policy/procedures as you were going along as nothing really existed and a new initiative called "Crushing I.T." was more of an effort to create best customer service practices by committee but no real buy-in from management. Praising individual initiatives but failing to portray a larger picture of what is needed for the whole department to improve. Needless to say it alienated the people who weren't apart of that committee or those who thought they were already giving good customer service but wasn't visible. Directors were indeed busy from all the other departments within IT that she ran, almost too busy to provide positive/negative feedback or make a decision about access rights for coworkers. Any suggestion/issue I had was directed to the director as my direct supervisor was replaced twice in 5 months. The company says they practice diversity but it seems related to providing opportunities to women or people of color rather then people with diversity of ideas. How I wished things would have worked out because I really liked what I was doing and i enjoyed following up with people in HR, management, and production/knowledge workers..I liked working in network security and performing audits as well as working with new employees as I prepared technical equipment for distribution. At least the small number of people i got to work with on a daily basis recognized my work and provide great references. I came in early, went the extra mile, and was always willing to learn. I would love to apply again, perhaps with a different supervisor or title or sense of direction. As you can see with comments made from others on this site, there's something not right with management in this department. I find it kind of strange that the Head of IT isn't at the same level as the CFO or CIO.

Good company, bad people

The company and product are both good. The plant manager is difficult to work with and has to be a part of every decision. Management favorites can get away with anything they want while others get written up or dismissed for the slightest infraction.

Interesting Work Lacking Leadership
|
The day to day work is generally interesting due to the unique industries Raven operates in. High level of autonomy is a freeing sensation compared to some other companies. There are dozens of software teams and due to company structure operate as mostly independent units. This is both good and bad, and depending on which team you’re with you’ll have a vastly different experience. Considering the size of the company promotions (at least in development) are very rare. Raises are evaluated every spring and tend to match inflation. Leadership is generally clueless when it comes to the knowledge workers, giving the impression that they’d rather not have them at all. Salaries are low for the region and industry. HR has a “we don’t negotiate with terrorists” mentality and insists on pay being at the “average market level”. IT has been experiencing a constant churn of staff for a couple years now so not sure what’s going on with them but it can’t be great.
Overall a decent place to work as long as you’re not looking for a high salary or career advancement.
Note that for full time salaried positions management expects 45 hrs/wk of work. Some individual managers think this is ridiculous but your mileage may vary. Don’t expect to ever work under 40 hrs in a week.

Fair enough for the first few years then you will have to find more training in house and that is difficult since the 60 year veterans have no intentions of leaving since they are in cushy positions.

Great Culture - Short-Sighted Decisions
|
The corporate culture is great. The people working there are friendly and supportive. Advancement opportunities are average. The main issue I observed was how short-sighted and reactionary upper-management could be with many of the decisions. It is a sales-driven organization and a publicly traded company. There are 3 main divisions of Raven, with the most prominent being in the agriculture industry. There were numerous layoffs during my 5 years and most were due to poor market conditions.
