This company just fired everyone before Christmas and still expected us to clean out the offices without extra pay. Terrible. Some people were good workers others were intolerable but the company couldn't afford to let them go. This job made people reevaluate their ethics.

Didn't fully trust in management and leadership
|
My coworkers day-to-day were great but my biggest issue was with leadership. Tried to convince us everything was fine even as the ship was sinking. I have been at companies where the senior leadership was willing to take constructive criticism and admit to mistakes during live town halls. At Smile Direct, it always felt like they were trying to tell us what we wanted to hear and that we would bounce back, but I never could fully buy into it. Decisions made long before I started seemed to be the cause of the decline, from what I could tell. Leadership was also quick to pivot on decisions and request changes that our software teams would have to scramble to accommodate. Why have a planned roadmap if you're going to slot in unplanned work the second the CEO asks for it? Just made everything we did in terms of planning feel kind of pointless. Looking back, there was also no formal engineering organization and most, if not all, developers were outsourced outside of the US. They were very talented, don't get me wrong, but I realize now without a formal Eng org to defend the developers, it was easy for US leadership to push them hard until they would burn out. Anyways, still grateful for the people I met and the professional experience - I grew a lot there. But not surprised how things turned out given the things I saw while working there.

Fun but stressful
|
The training was extremely stressful but definitely needed, the company as a whole was great to work for but during the pandemic became unreasonable. The work life balance was good, the job role itself was fantastic once you got the hang of it but it was a lot of pressure to meet the sales targets. It was a happy environment, I enjoyed my time working there.

Fun environment, coffees & biscuits, management were friendly salary was good for dental.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The people working on the line were great; lively and hardworking (even on 3rd shift). The Power Hour was the best. Several people getting the energy going as the sun was coming up.
What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The micro-manager always think she knew better than everyone else even though it was pretty obvious she was in way over her head.
What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Not sure about now, but in 2018, it was a step above assembly line and a step below professional; the middle gray area where you had to wear scrubs, but you dressed at home. Environmental elements would have come in on the scrubs. Another stupid decision that just gave the illusion of being a health professional.
What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Allocate Quality resources between lines that changed almost daily based on the nature of a startup plus management that didn't know what they were doing.
