While I never like to see someone lose their job, there are a few bad apples there and drag the atmosphere & morale within the workplace down. But, the CEO just got "retired" out by new board members forced in by the majority shareholders. Every day is meetings/distractions all day while you multitask to keep up. I learned to never get a salaried job at a union company again. Accounting department is still functional, so checks clear. They say they are hiring but haven't haired in years. Horrible turnover rate and the management is toxic and harassing almost daily. The benefit and compensation are bargained out on multi-year contracts that are voted on by bargaining-unit members in good standing, meaning your not on probation and you pay your union dues. The jobs are generally very simple, but high performers beware, as a union member you are payed for hours worked not for any productivity goals, which means more work doesn't equal more pay, and the company will work you as hard as you allow them. Safety was a big concern of mine throughout most of my employment, saw a number of "accidents", many of which were preventable. Trainings were almost non-existent with high management turnover. Lots of turnover, expect to be reassigned if you are trained and in low seniority. Jobs assignments are technically on a seniority basis if your fully trained. Job training and skill development are done on-the-job, expect training to be rushed and inconsistent as there are no trainers or team leads (cut out in the last contract) and with high turnover the knowledge base is heavily depleted. Great job if your just looking for cash weekly pay, decent insurance, and a job security, as long as there isn't a layoff. During a layoff, lowest senior get the axe 1st usually. The biggest issues are the confrontations between the company and the union, which bleeds into your everyday routines. Very adversarial and hostile at times, as a result, of constant changes and conflicting goals between the union and company. If you are able to ignore these confrontations then it's not the worst job out there. Comparatively the benefits aren't bad. Union protections on benefits and compensation.
