Review of being a Team Member at Del Taco
Working as a Team Member at Del Taco from 2010 to 2011 provided a valuable insight into the food service industry, enhancing both my culinary skills and customer service abilities. However, alongside the positive aspects, there were notable downsides to the experience.
On the positive side, the job offered hands-on experience in food preparation and service, allowing me to develop crucial skills in a fast-paced environment. Interacting with customers on a daily basis taught me the importance of effective communication and problem-solving, enriching my understanding of customer service dynamics. Additionally, collaborating with teammates during busy shifts fostered a sense of teamwork and camaraderie, creating lasting relationships.
In conclusion, while my time at Del Taco as a Team Member offered valuable learning opportunities, including food service skills and customer interaction, it was not without its challenges. Issues such as long hours, low compensation, lapses in food safety protocols, and the demanding nature of night shifts detracted from the overall experience, underscoring the need for improvement within the fast-food industry.
Nevertheless, there were significant challenges associated with the job. Long hours and high-stress situations during peak times often took a toll, requiring resilience and adaptability to navigate. Working during the night shift, in particular, was grueling, as it meant dealing with tiredness and managing customer demands during off-peak hours. Furthermore, the compensation and benefits provided were typically minimal, not proportionate with the effort and dedication required for the role.
One particularly troubling experience occurred when a manager picked up tacos that had fallen on the floor, dusted them off, and reused them for customers. Witnessing this disregard for food safety standards was deeply concerning and compromised the integrity of the establishment. Such incidents undermined morale among staff and eroded trust in management, highlighting systemic issues within the organization.
Additionally, the experience of working under different managers at different times revealed the challenges of inconsistent management styles. Each manager had their own approach to running the restaurant, leading to varying levels of efficiency and communication. One manager, in particular, made scheduling difficult by not including me on the schedule and then attempting to pencil me in without notice. This forced me to stand up for myself by taking photos of the schedule and my shifts to prevent manipulation. Learning to assert myself in this situation was a valuable lesson in advocating for my rights as an employee.
