If actually allowed to shine, this company would truly flourish. Unfortunately, leadership is stuck in its old ways. The GMs and vet marketing run the whole show (and are allowed to do so by spineless top leadership) despite having oh-so limited talent and knowledge beyond their very basic niche. You can bring them a thousand new ideas based on very real customer experience studies, and without failure they'll always wind up right back to their boring, ineffective ideas that were already outdated 10 years ago. And yet when performance doesn't improve, it's somehow everyone else's fault and never theirs. They contradict one another constantly and never respect the time or opinions of others. They've literally had entire departments fired (multiple times) just due to ill-placed blame and failure to self-reflect. So many wonderful employees have quit simply because of the poor leadership at this company, and they will continue to do so if nothing changes. Unfortunately, it likely never will because change has to come from the top. Easy to fall behind on metrics and have a performance review put in place. If you take unplanned time off like being sick, counts against you. They try to tell you to put it in as a pto request and if it gets approved based on the call center schedule, then you’re okay. But if it gets denied you’re kinda just expected to show up or it counts negatively against you. Extremely well-organized. Each member of management you are introduced to during the process is so encouraging, kind, and supportive. You leave the training program having so much belief in and enthusiasm for the product and the company as a whole that you're pumped to move into production mode and give it your absolute best. For many, the enthusiasm is very quickly squelched by very young, very inexperienced managers. Some will address you in a manner that makes you feel like you need to prove you're a decent human being who isn't going to do a major disservice to the company. You may feel patronized, humiliated, belittled, and get your spirit completely crushed by the micromanaging. I made a difficult decision to leave a lengthy career in a management role to be able to shift my focus more on family and my mental well-being. I showed up at Trupanion with a lot of valuable experience under my belt, prepared to give the company my absolute best. The carelessness and inexperience of some members of management not only threaten to diminish your self-worth but destroy the enthusiasm you had for being a top performer for a company the training program gets you really pumped to support. During training I told so many friends and family that I hoped it wasn't all too good to be true, and sadly it was. The way the company is structured it is a win for the pet owner, veterinarians and especially the pet. Some people are super unhelpful, and the members are not delightful to work with. Company leadership and GMs continuously make rash decisions, contradicting their previously made rash decisions, leaving little time to develop strategy or take insights from programs. Day-to-day micromanagement from leadership is debilitating, often pushing timelines and erasing any possibility of program success because of how late programs are launched. To solve for unsuccessful leadership, they hire middle managers who end up acting out of fear of not doing exactly what leadership asks of them. This fear permeates between all teams, making for a completely divided company and teams that only work for the whim of their leader’s needs, not the greater company goals. This company needs change from the top down, not more middle managers. Working for Trupanion will quickly show you how to not run a company.
